LA Galaxy Midfielder Landon Donovan Voted MLS Player of the Week
Published on April 25, 2011 under Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK (Monday, April 25, 2011) - LA Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 6 of the 2011 MLS season. Donovan had two goals and an assist in the Galaxy's 3-0 victory against the Portland Timbers on Saturday night.
Just four minutes into the match, Donovan's pass split the defense to find Chad Barrett at the top of the box. Barrett settled the ball before ripping a half-volley into the bottom-right corner.
In the eighth minute, Donovan burst into the penalty area seeking a David Beckham chip, but was fouled by Timbers defender Rodney Wallace. After Wallace received a caution, Donovan put the penalty kick past goalkeeper Troy Perkins for his first goal of the season.
Juan Pablo Angel replaced Miguel Lopez to start the second half and made his presence felt in the 67th minute. He controlled a ball in the box and spun away from a group of Timbers defenders toward the end line. Angel's measured cross to the back post found Donovan wide open for his second tally and the insurance goal.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
