L.A. Avengers sign DB Terrance Joseph
May 4, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Los Angeles Avengers News Release
LOS ANGELES -- Addressing an immediate need in their defensive backfield, the Los Angeles Avengers have signed defensive back Terrance Joseph, head coach Ed Hodgkiss announced today. Joseph, who previously played for the Avengers in 2002, is a veteran of seven Arena Football League seasons.
Joseph (6-foot-2, 210 pounds) is expected to play for the Avengers on Sunday, May 6, when they hit the road to take on the Las Vegas Gladiators at the Orleans Arena. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. (PT) and the contest will be televised live on FSN Prime Ticket.
On Friday, the Avengers also placed defensive back Rushen Jones on the injured reserve list and signed three players -- offensive lineman Phil Hawkins and defensive backs Kairi Cooper and Clarence Curry -- to the practice squad.
Joseph played in five games for the Avengers in 2002, finishing with 10 tackles and one pass breakup. His AFL career totals include 223 tackles, 43 pass breakups, nine interceptions and two forced fumbles. Joseph began his professional football career in 2000 with the San Jose SaberCats.
He began the 2007 campaign with the Utah Blaze, starting the first four games of the season. After being released by the Blaze on March 30, he signed with the Arizona Rattlers and played against the Avengers on April 6, at STAPLES Center. After that contest, Joseph went on to start the next three games for the Rattlers before being released on Wednesday.
At the University of Tulsa (Okla.), Joseph started 25 games during a three-year span (1994-96). He finished his Golden Hurricane career with 159 tackles, 16 pass breakups and eight interceptions, playing both safety and cornerback.
Jones is experiencing his second stay on the injured reserve list in 2007. He began the season on IR with an abdominal strain and was activated on April 20. One day later, he started for the Avengers in their game at San Jose, but strained a hamstring in that contest and has not played since. Jones will not be eligible to come off the injured reserve list until L.A.'s home game against the defending ArenaBowl champion Chicago Rush on June 2.
Hawkins (6-5, 330, Houston) and Cooper (5-11, 190, Indiana [Pa.]) are AFL rookies.
Curry (6-1, 210, Villanova) played in three games this season for the New Orleans VooDoo before being waived on April 20. He began his AFL career last season, playing in one game for the Philadelphia Soul.
