Los Angeles Avengers News Release

LOS ANGELES -- Oscar Sturgis, an offensive/defensive lineman with five years of experience in the Arena Football League, has signed with the Los Angeles Avengers, head coach Ed Hodgkiss announced today.

In another transaction, wide receiver/linebacker Curtis Marsh was placed on the injured reserve list with a left rib fracture and will miss the rest of the regular season.

Sturgis (6-foot-5, 285 pounds), who might play in Saturday night's game versus the Colorado Crush at STAPLES Center, was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the seventh round of the 1995 NFL Draft and played in four games as a rookie defensive end. He later also played for the Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins, Frankfurt Galaxy (NFL Europe) and Montreal Alouettes (CFL).

Sturgis began his AFL career with Arizona in 1998, helping the Rattlers to four playoff appearances and three consecutive trips to the semifinals (1998-2000). While playing in Phoenix, he racked up 28 tackles, 17 pass deflections, three quarterback sacks and two forced fumbles.

In 2002, Sturgis moved on to the Georgia Force, where he played until being waived on April 30. He played against the Avengers earlier this season at STAPLES Center on March 2, and recorded two tackles and a pair of quarterback hurries.

At the University of North Carolina, Sturgis played tight end, defensive end and outside linebacker.

The 2003 AFL Playoffs begin later this month and the Avengers could host as many as three postseason games at STAPLES Center, including ArenaBowl XVII on June 22. Three-game postseason packages, which start at just $24, are on sale now at 1-888-AVENGERS.

Single-game playoff tickets, starting at just $10, will go on sale at all Ticketmaster outlets and the STAPLES Center box office on Saturday at 3 p.m.
