Krunk look to make their mark on the city

September 7, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Charlotte Krunk News Release

Charlotte, NC. The brainchild of rap pioneer Duane "Spyder D" Hughes and his fiancee, Lisa Dillard, along with their jet pilot friend, Reggie Redding. The trio formed the Charlotte Krunk LLC as not just another basketball team. "It will be a way of life in Charlotte, proclaims Spyder. "It's not just about basketball. We will bring all sorts of entertainment to the city. We will make our mark in helping the less fortunate through my longtime friend Glenn Toby's Book Bank Foundation. And we will bring an elegant and vibrant night life to the mature, party minded adults and kids of the area."

"The city is growing and we are proud to be able to grow with it. We're talking new clubs, a learning center for kids. The basketball team is only the beginning. The after game concerts are only the appetizer. We're not finished. I've been told, "It can't be done." Maybe not. But I and my partners sure will give our all to try and prove those that say it can't be done, wrong."

Hughes added, "We are all set to play at the 10,500 seat Cricket Arena on Independence Blvd. The negotiations to get such a great arena have not been easy, but truly worth the wait. The basketball played on a nightly basis will be reminiscent of the old ABA. High flying, slam dunk, in your face funk!"

Brian Rowsom, who was the East Coach of the Year of last year's ABA Charlotte Thunder, is the General Manager of the team now. As a former NBA veteran of the Charlotte Hornets, he brings knowledge of the game and inner workings of a pro front office. His mere presence commands respect. He has tabbed his former assistant, Robert Floyd (aka Jaye) to be Head Coach of the new Charlotte Krunk. Coach Floyd has had an outstanding career as a high school All American from nearby Gastonia, NC and continued his outstanding play in the demanding European leagues where he still holds records. There will be an all new roster with the exception of ABA All-Star "Mr. Excitement" Brett Harper along with a couple of others.

The sports Gods truly smiled down upon us when veteran play-by-play man, and former Charlotte resident Derrick Pearson became available. Not only is he experienced and very talented at what he does (ABA Live Talk host among other things), he is a calming influence with his leadership for this new birthed organization.

The Charlotte Krunk is a unique sports name for a unique team in a unique city. With entertainment promotion genius Al Pizzaro teaming up with American Talent Agency, and ABA Entertainment, the term "Krunk" might take on a whole new meaning this season.
