Kreatures Coakley named to All-Star team
July 1, 2005 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL) - Kissimmee Kreatures News Release
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - He continually amazes his opponents, but Derric Coakley remains one of a kind for indoor football.
No surprise that the defensive lineman was named Friday to the National Indoor Football League's All-Star team that will compete in Odessa, Texas, on Saturday, Aug. 6.
Coakley, the 2nd-all-time quarterback sack leader in indoor football, continued his eight-year thirst for the game as a member of the Kissimmee Kreatures this past season.
Despite the fact the Kreatures season was not as successful (2-12), Coakley stood out among the blue and gold with five sacks, five fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles and 21.5 tackles.
Derric has been Defensive Player of the Year in three different leagues, has been Defensive Player for his respective team five times but more importantly has 55 sacks to his credit in eight seasons.
That's only four back of the all-time leader Sam Hernandez of the AFL's San Jose SaberCats (59) who played an abbreviated season in 2005.
Coakley's five fumble recoveries tied an NIFL record with two others for the most in a season. He also had one pass breakup and one quarterback hurry.
What other linemen will tell you is he is a very disruptive force on the defensive line. His anticipation rivals no lineman in any league and he has been able to get many false starts by the offensive linemen called.
He was one of only three players Kissimmee had that collected two tackles for loss in one game. His biggest game was a home encounter with Corpus Christi when he had three tackles and four assists.
