Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears were featured on the hit morning news show CBS Sunday Morning. The show aired Sunday, August 14th in a feature highlighting internships.
Kristina Shands, a member of the 2010-11 marketing and public relations team, began her career two years ago as an intern and was showcased as one of the features in the broadcast. A shift from the traditional mold of college internships by working with others 10 years her junior, Shands started with the Ice Bears as an assistant to the Marketing Director of the Knoxville Ice Bears.
The Knoxville Ice Bears provided support for the exposé as the CBS Sunday Morning story centered around Shands who was also featured in the April 15, 2010 Time Magazine article "Working For Free: The Boom in Adult Interns."
The Knoxville Ice Bears have offered internships since their inception in 2002. Over the past nine seasons, interns who have joined the team to gain real world experience have progressed on to the major leagues. Some of the former members of the organization went on to work for teams such as the Nashville Predators, Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets and most recently the Detroit Red Wings.
The University of Tennessee Sport Management program and the Knoxville Ice Bears have worked closely together for the past nine seasons. Through the relationship, the Ice Bears have over the years, hired six interns to full time employment with the organization.
"Working for the Knoxville Ice Bears provides valuable experience in professional sports. Like many other minor league organizations, interns are able to touch many different aspects of our business thereby giving a greater educational experience and thereby best prepared sports professionals that are a true reflection of our brand," said President and General Manager Mike Murray.

The Knoxville Ice Bears kick off the season on Friday, October 21st at 7:30 pm at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. The evening will feature a tribute to the launch of the 10th Anniversary Season.
