Walla Walla Sweets News Release
Walla Walla, Wa- The Corvallis Knights came into Borleske on a hot streak and kept going with a 6-2 win in game one over the Sweets. The win gave the Knights (26-20) a 4.5 game lead over the Sweets (21-24) in the wild-card and allowed Corvallis to keep their 1.5 game lead over Yakima Valley.
The Knights struck first in the second frame with two runs and it was countered quickly by Walla Walla in the bottom half. With runners on the corners for the Sweets, Willie MacIver lined a single into center field as Myles Hager took off from first. The runner from third, Kyle Dozier, scored easily and Hager made his was to third, but the throw from center was over the head of the third baseman and that allowed Hager to score.
The Knights would then add a run in the fifth and three more in the seventh to take the 6-2 lead.
The Sweets sent Micah Gorman to the hill in a match-up of All-Star pitchers as the Knights countered with Slater Lee. Gorman went five innings, giving up three runs (all earned), seven hits and striking out five. Lee had a much shorter night. After finishing the second inning with runners on second and third with a strikeout, he attempted a celebration with a jump and a fist pump. When he landed, he appeared to hurt his right leg and had to be helped off the field.
This marked the fifth straight game where the Sweets scored three or fewer runs.
Tomorrow, the Knights and the Sweets will come together again for game two. The Sweets will send Cooper Powell (0-4) to the hill and the Knights will turn to Chris Clements (2-2) for the series win. First pitch is slated for 5:05pm.
