Charlotte Knights News Release
(DURHAM, NC) -- Cody Asche hit his ninth home run of the season, but the Charlotte Knights dropped the finale of their three-game series to the Durham Bulls by a score of 4-1 on Thursday from Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, NC.
Down by a score of 4-1, the Knights battled back in the top of the ninth inning. Catcher Rob Brantly began the inning with a leadoff single. Two batters later, after Danny Hayes lined out, Jake Peter drew a one-out walk. The Knights brought the tying run to the plate with just one out, but ultimately fell just short in the end against their division rival. Grant Green flied out and Ronald Bueno later grounded out to end the game.
Charlotte starter Tyler Danish (3-11, 5.05) allowed three runs on 10 hits over five innings and was charged with the loss. Danish walked two batters and struck-out five, but allowed a costly two-run home run to Curt Casali in the second inning, which proved to be the difference. Casali finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored, the home run, and two RBIs. The Bulls tallied a total of 14 hits on the night.
Durham starter Brent Honeywell (11-7, 3.95) earned the win after five solid innings. Honeywell, who won MVP honors at the 2017 SiriusXM Futures Game last month, struck out eight batters on the night. Four Durham relievers combined to hold the Knights scoreless over the final four innings. Ryan Garton allowed two baserunners in the ninth, but held on to notch his fourth save of the season.
Jason Bourgeois had one of Charlotte's eight hits on Thursday and is now just two hits away from his 400th hit in a Knights uniform. Only two other players have reached the 400-hit club in Knights franchise history (Jordan Danks and Joe Borchard). Bourgeois also moved into sole possession of third place in Knights franchise history in games played with 358.
The Knights will now head home to Uptown Charlotte and open a three-game series against the Gwinnett Braves on Friday with a 7:05 p.m. game. Pre-game radio coverage will begin at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Charlotte (730 AM) and CharlotteKnights.com from BB&T Ballpark. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time Knights broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action.
