Knighthawks Name Steve Toll Franchise Player
July 31, 2008 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Rochester Knighthawks News Release
(Rochester, NY)... Rochester Knighthawks General Manager Jody Gage announced today that transition player Steve Toll has been named the team's franchise player for the upcoming 2009 National Lacrosse League season.
All 13 NLL teams submitted their players to the league office Thursday afternoon. The franchise tag on a player who has qualified to be an Unrestricted Free Agent keeps that player off of the free agent market and ensures that he remains with your club for the 2009 season. In return, the player is guaranteed to receive the league's Veteran Maximum salary for the 2009 season plus an additional 25 percent for being declared a franchise player. Each NLL team may declare a maximum of two franchise players.
Toll completed his 10th year of pro lacrosse and third with the Knighthawks this past season, scoring 32 points (7+25) while adding 166 loose balls in all 16 games to finish first on the team and third in the league.
A native of St. Catharines, Ontario, the 34-year-old right-hander had is best stint with Rochester during the 2007 campaign, capturing a career high 38 points (14+24) en route to winning his fifth NLL Championship. That same season, Toll was honored as the first ever NLL Transition Player of the Year and was named the Knighthawks' Best Defenseman, while finishing third best in the league with 177 loose balls.
The 6-foot-0, 195-pound speedster spent the majority of his career with the Toronto Rock, where he won four NLL Championships in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003.
Outside of the NLL, Toll was a member of the 2006 gold-medal Canadian National team at the World Field Lacrosse Championships. He also played for Team Canada in the 1998 and 2002 World Championships, winning silver medals each time.
