Knighthawks Game Notes vs. Buffalo

GAME NOTES: The Rochester Knighthawks host the Buffalo Bandits tonight at The Blue Cross Arena in the second game of the home-and-home series to open the 2008 National Lacrosse League season. The Knighthawks will raise their championship banners prior to hosting the Bandits at 7:35 p.m. The first 10,000 fans will receive a magnet schedule courtesy of Atlas Builders. The contest will be televised tape-delayed on Time Warner SportsNet (Channel 26) on Monday, January 14th at 9:00 p.m. The game is only available live via the B2 Networks.

LAST NIGHT: Rochester began its title defense last night with a 12-9 win over the Bandits at HSBC Arena. Shawn Williams (2+3) and Shawn Evans (1+4) each finished with five points, while John Grant (1+3) and Scott Evans (2+2) chipped in with four points each. Pat O'Toole made 41 saves in net. Buffalo was led by John Tavares (2+5) who finished with seven points. Mark Steenhuis had five points (3+2), while Mike Thompson had 39 saves for the Bandits. The season-opening win was Rochester's first since the November 24, 2001, breaking the team's five-game losing streak in opening games.

GOING FOR THE RECORD: Rochester is chasing the league's all-time record for consecutive wins, which, coincidently is held by the Buffalo Bandits. Buffalo won 22 straight games from 1992-1994. Rochester has won 16 straight games, dating back to last season.

KNIGHTHAWKS NOTES: Rochester has won its last four games against the Bandits, including last year's 14-13 overtime win in the East Division Finals. The Knighthawks are now 20-11 all-time in the regular season against the Bandits. Last night, Shawn Williams scored the 300th goal of his professional career. The game was also the 100th regular season game for Ken Millin. Rookie Matt Lyons also had a memorable night, recording two goals and one assist in his pro debut. With one goal and three assists, John Grant has now registered points in 110 straight games. Scott Evans is two points away from 250 in his career. Rochester has signed forward Drew Bucktooth to the practice squad and released forward Andrew Spack.

BUFFALO NOTES: John Tavares, in his 17th season, is just four goals shy of breaking Gary Gait's league goal-scoring record of 596. Tavares already owns the NLL marks for assists (648) and points (1,136). With Tavares in the lineup, the Bandits have their Top 7 goal scorers back from last season. Rochester Rattlers defenseman Joe Smith may make his NLL debut tonight against his former team. Smith was a practice squad player for the 2007 Knighthawks. Cory Bomberry, Dan Teat and Pat McCready are all former members of the Knighthawks. Head Coach Darris Kilgour also played in Rochester in 1999.

NEXT GAMES: Rochester travels to Philadelphia to battle the Wings on Friday, January 18th at the Wachovia Center at 8:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WYSL1040.com and B2 Networks. Rochester returns home on Saturday, January 26th to begin a four-game homestand. The Knighthawks host the Minnesota Swarm at 8:05 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on WYSL 1040-AM and wysl1040.com. The game will also be televised tape-delayed on Time Warner SportsNet (Channel 26).

KNIGHTHAWKS TO HONOR JUSTIN KUHN: At the Saturday, January 26th game, the Rochester Knighthawks will honor the memory of Justin Kuhn, the Irondequoit lacrosse player that died suddenly on November 8, 2007. The 14-year-old's dream was to play for the Knighthawks. To honor his wishes, the Knighthawks will present a personalized No. 32 jersey to his family before the game. During the game, the team will hold a raffle with items from other NLL teams and the Ontario Lacrosse Association. The money raised will go to Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong and the Ronald McDonald House.
