Knighthawks Fall One Goal Short

Rochester Knighthawks News Release

The Rochester Knighthawks closed out their two-game weekend with a 9-8 loss to the New England Black Wolves Saturday night at Connors & Ferris Field at The Blue Cross Arena.

"It was a good bounce-back night," said Knighthawks head coach Mike Hasen. "We played well and the opportunities were there. We played pretty even keel, but never got that extra push there tonight. We were right there with loose balls and faceoffs and we were better than last night."

Rochester (2-3), down by two goals with 20 seconds left in the game, had a glimmer of hope when the Black Wolves got called for an illegal substitution giving the Knighthawks a penalty shot. Cody Jamieson was able to put one past New England goaltender Aaron Bold to bring the team within one, but the clock ran out before they could get one goal in to tie it up.

"You don't really expect to (be the one to) go (for the shot), but you hope you're the one," Jamieson said. "You're just looking at the goalie one-on-one and thinking 'what is he thinking?' It's just a chess match. I was watching him and I had a plan. I just went for it."

Rochester was led offensively by Jamieson (2+4). Joe Resetarits (2+2) and Dan Dawson (2+1) contributed to the effort, while Austin Shanks and Kyle Jackson each put up single markers. Dawson is now just two goals away from tying Curt Malawsky for 10th on the team's all-time goal-scoring list.

"I think the first couple games everybody was just shooting and scoring," Jamieson said. "There was no adversity or hitting pipes or frustration. It's just a matter of calming down and settling down and getting that confidence back."

"We know what we've got to do to be successful," said Resetarits. "We're getting our chances. Everybody is. It just comes down to getting into a rhythm and putting them in."

The Knighthawks won 16 of 22 faceoffs, with Jake Withers going a remarkable 12 of 14.

"Jake has been really good," Hasen said. "One good thing we have going there is that Dylan Evans is also doing well. As a group, they're getting the job done for us."

The teams will meet again on Sunday, Jan. 21 as the Knighthawks travel to the Mohegan Sun Arena. Though tonight wasn't the outcome they'd hoped for, the team is looking forward to being able to battle again and work to come out on top.

"It's a long season," Resetarits said. "Highs and lows are going to happen, but it's a big game next week and we've got to put the effort in this week. We've got to be ready to play and make those adjustments for next week."
