
KiXX fall to Monterrey 7-6 in overtime

Philadelphia, PA, January 24, 2004 â The Philadelphia KiXX (11-7) were defeated by the Monterrey Fury (5-14), 7-6 in overtime in front of a season-high 7,114 fans at the Wachovia Spectrum tonight. KiXX player/coach had his hand in each of the club's six goals, finishing with a season-high six points on four goals and two assists. Marco Coria recorded the game winner on an assist with Ramon Fernandez at 5:33 of the extra stanza. Peter Pappas (10-6) took the loss in net for Philadelphia, with 10 saves on 17 chances, while Hector Mireles () turned away 12 of 18 shots to earn the victory for Monterrey.
KiXX newcomer Andy Guastaferro notched the only goal in the opening quarter, a strike from player/coach Don D'Ambra at 10:59 to give Philadelphia an early 1-0 advantage after one full period of action. Caudido tied the game at 1-1 with a restart goal on a feed from Genoni Martinez at 2:28 of the second stanza. D'Ambra connected with teammate Ze Roberto to regain the one-point, 2-1, lead for Philadelphia at 10:01 of the quarter. Monterrey midfielder Octavio Perez ended the second-period scoring with a tally at 13:30 to knot the score even, 2-2, entering the half.
With Fury defender Genoni Martinez in the box serving a two-minute pushing penalty, D'Ambra put the team back up one, 3-2, with his second tally of the night at 6:23 of the third quarter. Les Lunsford lengthened the lead to two, 4-2, with a notch at 10:22. Monterrey responded with two unanswered goals to finish the third period tied at 4-4. Armando Valdivia struck first with a power-play goal at 11:57, courtesy of a two-minute hand-ball penalty called on KiXX defender Adam Bruckner. Ricardo Gil then registered a tally at 13:06 on an assist from Martinez.
D'Ambra registered his second consecutive hat trick with his third tally of the contest on a dish from Joel Shanker at 3:21 of the fourth stanza; the 32-year old Philadelphia native also recorded three goals in the club's last outing, a 5-0 victory over the San Diego Sockers on January 17. Caudido answered right back with a power-play goal at 8:30 to again knot the score even, 5-5. Lopez recorded the assist, while D'Ambra served a two-minute tripping penalty to give the Fury the one-man advantage on the play. Monterrey took their first lead of the night, 6-5, when Perez connected on his second notch of the contest on an assist from Valdivia at 13:10. D'Ambra forced the club's third overtime of the season with his fourth goal, this one from Matt Brooks with only 12 seconds remaining.
After five minutes of play, Marco Coria connected with Ramon Fernandez to earn a 7-6 overtime victory for the Fury. Philadelphia is now 1-2 when forced to the extra stanza this season.
Notes: KiXX goalkeeper Peter Pappas allowed a goal to Caudido in the second quarter of action; the tally snapped his shutout streak at 92:35, marking a new franchise best. Philadelphia defender Tony McPeak appeared his 50th career game tonight. Don D'Ambra's four-goal performance tonight ties his best outing as a member of the KiXX, while his six points sets his high with the club. He tallied his 21st hat trick tonight with Philadelphia, second only to captain Kevin Sloan who has recorded 23.
