Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release
SPRINGDALE, Ark. - Travelers starter RHP Jordan Kipper (3-2, 3.78 ERA) tossed the third no-hitter in Arvest Ballpark history as Arkansas (14-24) defeated the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (18-19) by the score of 6-0 on a chilly Tuesday night. The no-hitter thrown by Kipper is the first time an opponent has no hit the Naturals.
Kipper, selected by the Angels in the ninth round of the 2014 draft out of TCU, was making his first start of the season against Northwest Arkansas and was coming off of a no decision effort against Tulsa where he went 6.2 innings giving up 10 hits and three earned runs. Tonight, however, was a much different story as the tall righty was in command of his pitches the entire night as he faced the minimum through 9.0 innings of work. He was dominant as his no-hitter consisted of only one walk and eight strikeouts. The only blemish was a walk to Ramon Torres to start the game but he quickly erased him with a double-play ball off the bat of Ryan O'Hearn to end the frame.
RHP Kyle Zimmer (0-1, 0.00) got the start in his first appearance for Northwest Arkansas in 2016 and allowed an unearned run and struck out two in an inning of work. RHP Yender Caramo provided a bright spot out of the Naturals' bullpen as he gave his team 5.0 solid innings allowing an unearned run while scattering five hits.
Tonight marks the third time that a no-hitter has been thrown at Arvest Ballpark. The first time was on May 10, 2012 when Greg Holland (MLB Rehab), Chris Dwyer, Brandon Lafferty, and Kendal Volz combined on a no-hitter against the Springfield Cardinals in a 2-0 victory. The second no-hitter was on June 27, 2013 when Brooks Pounders threw the only complete-game, no-hitter in Naturals' history in an 11-0 win over Midland.
The Northwest Arkansas Naturals homestand will continue tomorrow morning - Wednesday, May 18 - with Game 3 against the Arkansas Travelers at Arvest Ballpark with first pitch is scheduled for 11:05 a.m. on SWEPCO School Kids Day. The Double-A Los Angeles Angels will send RHP Tyler Carpenter (0-2, 4.76 ERA) to the mound and the Naturals will counter with LHP Matt Strahm (2-2, 2.68 ERA). You can catch the live play-by-play action with the Voice of the Naturals Benjamin Kelly on your home for Naturals baseball on KQSM 92.1 The Ticket at 10:40 a.m. for the Indigo Sky Casino Pregame Show leading up to first pitch at Arvest Ballpark at 11:05 a.m.
