The Kingsport Axmen defeated the Elizabethton River Riders by a final score of 3-1 on Wednesday night. Kingsport is now 5-0 in games at Elizabethton.
The game was scoreless after the first inning. In the top of the second, Kingsport scored on a Henry Hunter RBI sac fly. Hunter drove in all three Axmen runs in Wednesday night's victory.
Axmen starting pitcher Matt Cornelius struck out six batters through his first three innings pitched.
Kingsport (25-9) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a Hunter RBI groundout which scored Kendall Diggs.
No runs were scored in innings five through seven. In the eighth inning, the Axmen scored their third and final run on a Hunter RBI single.
Kingsport had a combined no-hitter entering the bottom of the ninth. The River Riders (16-18) recorded two hits and one run in the ninth but ultimately lost by two runs.
Cornelius (2-0, 3.82 ERA) had an outstanding performance on the mound for the Axmen. He picked up his second win of the year, finishing with six no-hit innings pitched, allowing one walk and 10 strikeouts.
The Axmen look to win their sixth straight and complete the series sweep over the River Riders on Wednesday night in Elizabethton.
