Kings Sign Schenn To A One-Day NHL Contract

LOS ANGELES, CA - The Los Angeles Kings, the parent club of the Manchester Monarchs, have signed center Brayden Schenn to a One-Day NHL Regular Season Amateur Tryout Agreement and he is expected to join the Kings today in Vancouver, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today. In addition, the Kings have placed forward Andrei Loktionov on the injured reserve list.
Schenn, 18, was selected by the Kings in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He has played in 24 games this season with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League (WHL), and he leads his club in points (39) and assists (27). He also ranks tied for second in goals (12) while recording a plus-13 rating and three power-play goals. Schenn's 39 points also rank fourth overall in the Western Hockey League while serving as a team captain.
This is Schenn's third season playing for Brandon. In 70 regular season games in 2008-09, he recorded 88 points (32-5688) and 82 penalty minutes en route to being named a WHL Second-Team All-Star. His 88 points led Brandon and ranked seventh overall in the WHL. His 32 goals were tied for second on the team and his 56 assists were ninth in the WHL (second on the Wheat Kings).
In 12 playoff games, Schenn recorded 18 points (8-1018) and 12 penalty minutes as he helped the Wheat Kings reach the WHL's Eastern Conference Finals. His 18 points was tied for first on Brandon (tied for ninth in the WHL) while his eight goals was third (tied for ninth in the WHL).
In 2007-08, the 6-foot, 192-pound native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, led Brandon with 71 points and 43 assists (28-4371) in 66 regular season games en route to being named the WHL Rookie of the Year. His 71 points ranked first among all WHL rookies, while he was second among league freshman in goals and assists. He became the first 16-year-old since 1971 to lead Brandon in scoring.
Internationally, Schenn has won two gold medals representing Team Canada in 2008, first at the 2008 Under-18 World Championships and the second as an alternate captain at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. Schenn won a bronze medal for Canada West at the 2008 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. He has been invited to Canada's National Junior selection camp (along with current Kings prospect Martin Jones), which takes place next month.
Brayden, who will wear No. 55, is the younger brother of Toronto defensemen Luke Schenn. He would be the third youngest player to appear in a game for the Kings and the 19th teenager to play for the Kings all-time.
Loktionov, 19, suffered an upper-body injury in his NHL debut last night in Edmonton. He was the 18th teenager to play for the Kings all-time. He was recalled from the Monarchs on Monarchs is currently Manchester's team leader with 17 points and 11 assists (6-1117) in 20 games. His 17 points are tied for third most among AHL rookies, while his 11 assists are second among AHL freshman. He also has a plus-6 rating, tied for ninth among rookies. The 5-foot-10, 179-pound native of Voskresensk, Russia was selected by the Kings in the fifth round (123rd overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
The Monarchs return to the Verizon Wireless Arena for a 7:30 p.m. contest with the Springfield Falcons on Friday, November 27. The first 2,000 fans will receive envelopes containing cash and prizes, and fans will also receive prizes throughout the night for Thanksgiveaway. The Monarchs are asking fans to bring in new, unopened plastic jars of peanut butter and/of jelly to benefit the New Hampshire Food Bank as part of the Peanut Butter-Jelly Time Food Drive on Friday.
