Kings Sign Former Oiler Michael Young

LUBBOCK, TX: October 3, 2006 - The Lubbock Cotton Kings of the Central Hockey League (CHL) added a free agent to the 2006/2007 roster with the acquisition of center Michael Young.

Young arrives in the Hub City after spending his rookie campaign last season with the Tulsa Oilers. The Gillam, Manitoba native appeared in 61 games last season with the Oilers and registered 11 points off 5 goals and 6 assists. He ranked fourth on the Oilers squad in shorthanded goals with two. Young had a career high night on December 9th last season, collecting the "Gordie Howe hat trick" with a goal, an assist and fighting major penalty.

The 5'8" 172-pound centerman enjoyed a prolific junior career prior to turning pro. Young is the all-time assists (218) and points (310) leader for the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's (MJHL) OCN Blizzard, which is the same junior program that produced brothers Jordin and Terence Tootoo (Young was teammates with Terence). The 23 year-old Young played with OCN from 99/00 - 03/04 and also spent a few games at the major junior level playing with the Swift Current Broncos (99/00) and the Brandon Wheat Kings (01/02). His overall junior career included 92 goals and 220 assists for 312 point in 271 games. Young spent one season competing at the collegiate level, spending the 04/05 season with the University of Manitoba.

The signing of Young gives the Kings 22 players announced for the 06/07 season. He joins goaltender Michael Clements, Josh Gartner, Brett Koscielny and Kyle Stanton, defensemen Chris Barth, Stacey Bauman, Jason Beatty, Marc Bianchi, Noel Henck, Craig Minard, Troy Neumeier and forwards Bobby Brown, Jimmy Callahan, Pat Doherty, Philippe Lacasse, Andrew Luciuk, Paul McBrien, Jaydyn Murray, Corey Rutt, Simon Watson, Trevor Weisgerber on the 06/07 roster. Young qualifies as a developmental player (128 games or less played). Each CHL team must have at least five developmental players on their roster.
