Kings Continue Building Inaugural Roster

Champion City Kings News Release

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio. - Opening Day for the Champion City Kings is less than three weeks away as the club's roster continues to take shape. The team has added four pitchers in Ryan Shockey (Bluefield College), William Young (Weatherford College), Brad Williams (Campbellsville University), and Evan Dunn (Pepperdine University).

Shockey, a Blaine, Wash., native is a 6-foot-2, junior right-hander that has held down a front-end starting role for the Rams this Spring and has also been used as a closer at times.

"This spring at Bluefield, [Shockey] spent time at the top of their rotation getting a start every seven days, but also coming in to close for an inning once a week," said Kings manager Brett Neffendorf. "Knowing he can be successful in either role, this will allow us to look at Ryan as either a closer or starter."

Neffendorf also likes the way Shockey goes about his business on the mound. "Shockey isn't going to blow it by hitters," Neffendorf added. "He hits spots, doesn't allow free bases, and competes as well as anyone I've seen this year."

Currently, Shockey owns an 8-4 record and an ERA of 2.93.

Young is a freshman from Weatherford, Texas with exciting ability. "When William takes the mound, be prepared for some electric stuff," said Neffendorf. "With the live fastball and power slider he has, you'll see two pitches from him that are as good as it gets in the Prospect League."

Williams is a 6-foot-1, 195 pound left-hander from Perth, Australia. Before Campbellsville, Williams had major success in the junior college ranks. Due to a foot injury, he has missed most of this Spring with the Tigers.

"It won't take people long to understand how Brad was able to lead the nation in ERA (NJCAA DII) two seasons ago," Neffendorf stated. "Nothing he throws is straight, he commands four pitches, and he's confident to the point where you'll see off-speed pitches in fastball counts."

Dunn is a sophomore reliever from Las Vegas, Nev. The 6-foot-2 right-hander has appeared 14 times for the Waves and owns a 2.04 ERA through 17.2 innings pitched.

With a somewhat unique style, Dunn figures to be a regular option for the Kings. "I am a firm believer every good pitching staff needs a guy like Evan Dunn," stated Neffendorf. "As a submarine-throwing specialist out of the pen, you can expect to see Evan coming in when we need three big outs or to set up for a closer."

The Kings open the 2014 season at home against the Chillicothe Paints on Wednesday, May 28 at 7:05 p.m.
