Kings Add Davenport Pitcher Corey Murphy
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Champion City Kings are revealing one player from the 2015 roster each Friday this offseason. This week, the Kings are pleased to announce Davenport University (NAIA) right-handed pitcher Corey Murphy will suit up for the club this summer.
"Corey is a right-handed pitcher that has definitely proved himself at the college level," Kings manager Chris Perkovich said. " He is a guy who's been consistently successful for a top 25 NAIA program, earning Pitcher of the Year, All-Conference, and Honorable Mention All-American honors last season."
A Grand Rapids, Mich., native, Murphy has made an impact for the Panthers' in each of his first two seasons. As a freshman, Murphy made four appearances, three of them starts, went 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA and struck out 10. Last Spring, Murphy improved to the tune of a 9-2 record in 12 starts. He recorded six complete-games, three shutouts, struck out 55, and recorded an ERA of 1.55, while oppopnents hit just .208 against him.
"By putting up those types of numbers, there is no doubt in my mind he will only carry that success over into summer," said Perkovich. Corey throws hard, throws strikes, and that is perfect for us when paired with the talent we have on defense. He shoud be very successful in his role with the Kings this summer. He's a guy that could absolutely explode on the scene, Corey is something special."
Murphy and his Kings teammates will open the 2015 season at home against the Richmond RiverRats on Wednesday, May 27 at 7:05 p.m. at Carleton Davidson Stadium in Springfield.
