RIO GRANDE VALLEY KILLER BEES

2003-04 WEEKLY RELEASE

FOR THE WEEK OF Jan. 12 - Jan 18TH

100K ON THE WAY

This Sunday, the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees will have their 100,000th fan go through the turnstiles of the Dodge Arena, as the Bees face off with the Odessa Jackalopes. The Killer Bees have seen 98,261 fans roll into the Dodge Arena this season, placing the Bees 1,739 shy of the 100K mark. The Bees rank 22nd out of the 98 professional minor league teams in North America with an average attendance of 4,870, which does place them third out of the eleven expansion franchises around minor professional hockey.

BEE OF THE WEEK

This week's "Bee of the Week" honor, for their role in the previous week's games, is awarded for a second consecutive week to Bill Newson. The Enfield, Connecticut native led the team in scoring with 3 goals and 1 assist for 4 points in the week's three contests. The Bees all-star scored the Bees lone goal in the Friday loss against Laredo and scored two special team goals (power play and shorthanded goal) to lead the Bees to a 3-2 victory over the Austin Ice Bats on Sunday. Newson has scored 13 goals in his last 12 games.

ROADIES

Rio Grande Valley has played the fewest amount of road games this season, with only 15 played, but being on the road isn't all that bad. The Bees, one of eight CHL teams with winning records on the road, have only allowed 37 goals on the road, which leads the league. Their power play percentage is at 15.1% on the season, but the Bees rank fifth in the league on the road with a percentage of 17.1%. The Bees play three consecutive road games before returning home Sunday

SCORING FIRST

The Killer Bees are 12-1-0 this season when scoring first, ranking second in the league behind Laredo's 21-0-1 record when scoring first. The Bees have also been successful when taking leads into the intermissions. The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees join Laredo, Memphis and Wichita as the only CHL teams that have yet to lose a game in regulation after having a lead in the first and second intermission. The first-year squad is 10-0-1 when leading after the first period of play and 10-0-1 when leading after the second period of play.
