Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release


The Killer Bees (16-18-6, 38 pts.), on the heels of a 5-0 loss at Youngstown, play the first of three straight games against the Corpus Christi Rayz (22-15-5, 49 pts). The teams sandwich a game at American Bank Center in between a pair at Doge Arena. The two Southeast Division Rivals have not met since a 6-1 Corpus win on Jan. 5 at the ABC. The Bees took three of six points in a three-game set at Youngstown last weekend and have earned at least a point in seven of their last 10. The Rayz, meanwhile, have the second-most points in the Southern Conference and have won seven of their last 10. The Rayz are playing without Adam Powell for this three game set and will be without Jason Baird tonight as a result of their actions in Sunday's game vs. Laredo.

TONIGHT'S STAT FACTS

- The Bees went 3-1-0 in October, 5-5-1 in November, and 4-8-2 in December. They are 4-4-2 in January so far.

- Rio snapped a five-game winless skid (0-4-1) on the road with last Friday's win. The Bees are 3-9-2 since Dec. 2 on the road.

- The Rayz have scored 37 goals in their last 10 games, led by Niklas Lindberg (6), Justin Quenneville and Matt Turek (5 each).

- Three of the CHL's top 10 goalies are involved in tonight's game. Brent Zelenewich went into last night's CHL action third overall in GAA (2.62), while Rio's Jeremy Symington was sixth (2.82) and Ron Vogel checked in at seventh (2.82).

- Tonight marks the first three-in-a-row matchup between the Bees and Rayz although they don't play on three consecutive days in the next go' round. They'll do it again March 3-10.

Rio is 22-12-1-6 all time vs. Corpus Christi (11-6-1-4 at home, 11-6-0-2 on the road...Rio was 5-0-0 at Corpus Christi last season...Prior to Jan. 5, the last time the Rayz beat Rio at the American Bank Center was March 17, 2005.

Rio is 3-2-1...Overall, the Bees and Rayz square off 12 times this season (6 home, 6 road)...Corpus has been victorious in the last three meetings (including one SOW)... The Rayz have outscored Rio 11-2 in the last two meetings.

KILLER BEES GOALIE NOTES

Symington

- Set a franchise record with 53 saves in a 3-2 SO win at Youngstown on Jan. 26.

- Snapped a six-game winless streak (0-3-3) on January 12 with 28 saves in a 3-2 SO win over Amarillo.

- Won six in a row from Nov. 22 - Dec. 9.

- Selected as the Southern Conference starting goaltender in the 2007 Dodge CHL All Star Game at Bossier-Shreveport on January 17.

- Signed with Rio on Nov. 17 after beginning the season with Youngstown. Is 5-2 since signing with the Bees.

- Went 2-0 with the Steelhounds, winning two games at Memphis opening weekend.

- Earned first Bees win in a 34-save, 3-0 shutout of Bossier-Shreveport on Nov. 22. Followed that up with another 3-0 shutout (31 saves) two nights later at Bossier, and earned Oakley CHL Goalie of the Week Honors for Week Six.

- Symington's string of shutout hockey ended at 171:47, a new team record (Nov. 18-Nov. 28, eight consecutive periods-plus)

- Went to the CHL finals with Laredo in 2005 after a solid regular season that saw him post an 18-10-1 record with a 2.39 GAA. He was also a CHL All-Star in 2005.

- Was an eighth round draft selection of the NY Islanders in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.

Van Nynatten

- Named Week 14 Oakley Goalie of the Week after posting wins on Jan. 19 and 20...win on Jan. 19 snapped a personal 0-5-1 skid.

- Earned first pro win with 24 saves in second pro start at Laredo on October 28.

- Made 41 saves in a 2-1 win at Odessa on Nov. 16.

- Teammate and roommate of Killer Bee Ryan Carrigan at Niagara from 2003-05.

- Ranks first on CHA chart in career wins and minutes.

- Made an NCAA season-high 59 saves in a 7-1 loss at Minnesota on Jan. 7, 2006.

- Stopped Ryan Campbell on a penalty shot at Memphis (Nov. 25, 2006)

KILLER BEES PLAYER NOTES

BEES ACQUIRE WARRINER; ORR WAIVED

The Bees acquired center Nick Warriner from the Rocky Mountain Rage in exchange for the rights to defenseman Jeff Mushaluk on Jan. 27. To make room for him on the roster, forward Doug Orr was waived on Jan. 31. Warriner is 5-foot-9, 180-pound Blenheim, Ontario, native in his second full pro season. He was a member of Laredo's 2006 President's Cup Championship team and posted seven points (3-4-7) in 16 playoff games in addition to 25 points (11-14-25) in 59 regular season contests. Warriner played 36 games for the Rage and collected 15 points (7-8-15). Orr posted 10 points (5-5-10) in 16 games with the Bees this season.

GOUETT SIGNS WITH BEES; O'LEARY PLACED ON IR

The Bees signed defenseman Mark Gouett on January 26 and placed forward Mark O'Leary on the 14-day injured reserve list retroactive to January 20. Gouett is a 6-foot-0, 210-pound blueliner in his fifth full professional season. The Waubaushene, Ontario, native played four seasons at the University of Vermont, and his pro stops include Jackson (ECHL), Greenville (ECHL) and Long Beach (ECHL), as well as a brief stint with Portland (AHL). He played the last two seasons with the London Racers (EIHL) and was a teammate of Bees alternate captain Dennis Maxwell there. Gouett also played 11 games in Austria with Lustenau last season, and began the 2006-07 season there before signing with Rio.

BEES ACQUIRE BUTLAND FROM OKLAHOMA CITY

The Bees acquired defenseman Dale Butland from the Oklahoma City Blazers for right wing Emery Olauson on January 15. Butland is a physical, 6-foot-4, 215-pound blueliner from Steinbach, Manitoba. The rookie has three assists and 105 minutes in penalties in 31 games this season. His penalty minute total was second on the Blazers.

VOLTERA BAGS CAREER GOAL 100

Rob Voltera scored two goals on January 19 vs. Wichita. The game-winner and his first of the night was his 100th career goal.

CIRONE REACHES 1000

Jason Cirone played in his 1000th career game (including playoffs) on December 31 at Laredo.

MEDLEY NAMED CHL NORTHERN CONFERENCE ALL STAR MVP

Killer Bees defenseman Matt Medley was named the 2007 CHL Northern Conference All-Star Team Most Valuable Player at the Dodge All Star Game Wednesday Night in Bossier-Shreveport. Medley recorded a goal and two assists and was plus-5 in the contest, which the Northern Conference won 9-6. It was the fourth year in a row the Northern Conference took home bragging rights. Wednesday Night's All-Star appearance was the first of Medley's pro career. The Montreal native had a standout rookie campaign with Rio Grande Valley in 2005-06 and was recently reacquired by the Bess from the Tulsa Oilers.

MASSE FACTORS INTO TYING, GWG GOALS IN FIRST BEES GAME

David Masse picked up an assist on Rob Voltera's game-tying goal, and then scored the shootout game-winner in his first game as a Bee on January 12, 2007. He is now 4-for-5 in shootouts this season. He had points in his first four games with Rio (1-5-6).

BANGED UP BEES

Jason Cirone was placed on the 14-day injured reserve on Dec. 31. He returned to the lineup on January 14. On January 5 at Corpus Christi, Brent Cummings left the game in the second period and did not return. He was placed on 14-day injured reserve following the game.

BEES ACQUIRE MASSE AND MEDLEY

The Bees acquired left wing David Masse and defenseman Matt Medley from the Tulsa Oilers in exchange for left wing Bill Newson and defensemen Kurtis Dulle and Jamie Lovell. Masse, 24, is tied for second among CHL goal scorers (20) and is tied for sixth overall in CHL scoring. He departs the Oilers tied for the team lead in scoring (20-19-39). Medley, 23, played for the Bees last season and set a franchise record for goals in a season by a defenseman with 13.

BOOSTER SHOT

The Bees averaged 2.73 goals scored per game in the 33 games up until "The Trade" that brought David Masse and Matt Medley to the Valley. In the next five games Rio has potted 18 goals (3.60).

CEASE FIRE!

Youngstown set an opponent record with 55 shots on January 26 at the Chevrolet Center in Youngstown. Jeremy Symington set a Bees record with 53 saves in the 3-2 SO win, while the shot total was also a franchise-high for the Steelhounds.

GET THE FIRST GOAL

Rio is 5-14-2-3 (W-L-OTL-SOL) when allowing the first goal and 11-4-1 when scoring first.

IT'S NEVER EASY TO COME BACK

The Bees are 1-18-1-2 when trailing after two periods. Conversely, they are 13-0-0 when leading after two.

EACH DAY, BY DAY, DAY BY DAY, BY DAY

Rio has been the most successful on Fridays (8-5-2). Their least successful day of the week is Sunday (0-6-1). The team plays at least one game on each day of the week except Monday this season.

BEES EARN FIRST SHOOTOUT WIN

The Bees won in the shootout vs. Amarillo on January 12, 2007, their first SO win in four attempts to that point. It was Rio's first SO win since March 7, 2006 (3-2 vs. Bossier-Shreveport).

BEES LOSE AT CORPUS CHRISTI FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ALMOST TWO YEARS

A 6-1 loss at Corpus Christi on January 5, 2007, marked the first time the Bees lost at American Bank Center for the first time since March 17, 2005.

CORPUS SETS OPPONENT HIGH FOR SHOTS

Corpus Christi peppered Jeremy Symington with 21 shots in the second period on Dec.1, a season high. The franchise record is 23 shots allowed at Odessa (3/4/05, 2nd).

LAREDO BOMBS NINE GOALS VS. BEES

The nine goals scored by Laredo on Dec. 10 set a new opponent regular season record. The previous high was eight, scored by the Bucks on Dec. 17, 2004. Laredo scored nine goals vs. the Bees in Game 5 of the first round of 2006 CHL playoffs (April 9, 2006).

AUSTIN TIES OPPONENT RECORD

Austin scored goals 11 seconds apart on Nov. 11, setting a new opponent record for quickest goals.

SPARE SOME GAS MONEY?

Beginning February 20, the Bees play seven of eight games away from Dodge Arena, including six in a row (Feb. 20-March 3). That's the second longest road trip in franchise history. The team went on a seven-game swing from Dec, 12-30, 2003, and compiled a 3-2-2 record. The Bees play eight of nine on the road from Feb. 20-March 10; the only home game in that span is the Kid's Only Game vs. Austin on March 6. The Bees visit Arizona, New Mexico, Odessa, Austin, Laredo and Corpus Christi (three times).

COMPACTING THE SCHEDULE

The Bees play 12 three-in-three stretches this season. The Bees close the season with a trio of three-in-three weekends in March.
