Killer Bees beat IceRays 3-0, Rays eliminated from playoffs

March 26, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL) - Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

Wylie Rogers made 30 saves for his first career playoff shutout as the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees beat the Corpus Christi IceRays 3-0 and won the Southern Conference Opening Round Series two games to one. The IceRays roller coaster season officially comes to a close with their elimination from the playoffs and the Bees will advance to face the Texas Brahmas in the Southern Conference Semifinals. The IceRays would like to thank all of their season ticket holders, sponsors and fans for their support throughout the 2008-2009 season.

The Killer Bees - who lead the league by scoring first in 39 games in the regular season games - opened the scoring for the third straight time in the series. At 5:51 Bees leading scorer Jesse Bennefield found some space from the top of the right circle, faked a slap shot and then sent a wrist shot along the ice through the legs of Kris Tebbs to give the Bees a 1-0 lead. The goal stood as the lone marker of the period and the Bees took the lead into the first intermission. Both teams had 11 shots on goal.

The Bees increased their lead early in the second period. A blocked shot caromed right to Grant Goeckner-Zoeller from the inside edge of the left circle and he snapped a shot past Tebbs at 1:01 of the period to give the Bees a 2-0 lead. The clubs remained scoreless the rest of the frame. The Rays outshot the Bees 6-4 in the period but entered the final period trailing by a pair.

The Rays couldn't penetrate the Bees attack in the third and Aaron Lee put the final stamp on the game with an empty net, shorthanded goal at 18:40 of the period.

Kris Tebbs (1-2) took the loss making 24 saves on 26 shots. Wylie Rogers (2-0) earned the win with a 30 save shutout. The IceRays power play went 0-7 and the Bees also went 0-7 on the man advantage. The IceRays outshot the Bees 30-27.

The Killer Bees will now advance to face the #1 seeded Texas Brahmas in the best-of-seven Southern Conference Semifinals. Game One will be at the NYTEX Sports Centre in North Richland Hills, TX on Saturday night at 7:05pm.
