Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, TX: September 2, 2004 â The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League welcomed a new addition to the 2004/2005 roster with the signing of defenseman Josh Mizerek.
"Josh fills the spot left open from the trade in which we lost Kevin Mackie," said Killer Bees Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Tracy Egeland. "He is a top-four defenseman that is very skilled to play in different situations and brings experience that will be counted upon to provide leadership. Van Burgess, who is a scout of ours and a former teammate of Josh, highly recommends him."
Mizerek (miz-er-eck) was born on Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County, California, but grew up in Duluth Minnesota. He joins the Killer Bees with five years of pro experience, which he has produced 20 goals and 65 assists for 85 points in 256 games. All of Mizerek's pro experience has come from the ECHL, where he played last season with the Louisiana Icegators and recorded 28 points off of 3 goals and 25 assists in 60 games. As a member of the ECHL affiliate of the Minnesota Wild, Mizerek led the Icegators in assists for the month of November with 12 and also ranked second amongst defensemen in power play points (18) and tied for third in power play assists with 16.
The 26 year-old Mizerek began his career in 99/00 with the Dayton Bombers and played his first full season in 00/01 with the Florida Everblades and the Baton Rouge Kingfish. With the Kingfish, Mizerek finished second among team defensemen in scoring with 29 points (11g,18a) and led the team's defensemen in goals with 11. Mizerek completed the 01/02 entirely in the Pelican State, splitting the season with the Kingfish and the New Orleans Brass. He joined the Lexington Men O'War in 02/03 and co-led defensemen in games played, appearing in 67 games before returning to Louisiana last season.
The 6'0", 200-pound defenseman turned pro after completing four seasons (96/97 â 99/00) of NCAA Div. I hockey at Miami (OH) University, where he played alongside NHL'ers Dan Boyle (Tampa Bay), Randy Robitaille (Atlanta) and newly signed Killer Bee Anthony Donskov. Over his RedHawk career, Mizerek tallied 13 goals and 52 assists for 65 points in 144 games. He was selected to the CCHA all-Rookie team as a freshman in 96/97, finishing as the team's second highest scoring defenseman with 20 points (4g,16a). Mizerek was named to the Denver Cup All-Tournament team in 97/98 as a sophomore and finished third on the squad amongst defensemen with 15 points in 36 games. He led Miami defensemen in scoring in both his junior (98/99) and senior (99/00) seasons. Prior to Miami, he competed in American juniors. He was a member of the North Iowa Huskies of the United States Hockey League (USHL) during the 95/96 season. Mizerek was the first rookie in team history to play in every game his rookie season and was named to the USHL all-star team and garnered 2nd Team All-USHL honors.
Mizerek marks the 15th player signed by the Killer Bees this season. He joins goaltenders Jeff Levy and Jacque Vezina; defensemen Derek Holland, Sean Gillam, Darcy Smith, Jason Tessier; and forwards Anthony Donskov, Matt Donskov, Blaz Emersic, Jason Hawes, Matic Kralj, Troy Linna, Bill Newson and Ryan Shmyr.
