Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - The youth of the nation will be on display Friday night as the Dubuque Fighting Saints host Kids Run the Rink, presented by Y105 Radio, at 7:35 p.m. versus the Omaha Lancers. The evening will feature children helping take over the arena and assisting as members of the game night staff, and helping provide the evening's entertainment and fun.
Kids will be serving as ticket takers, program salesmen, ushers, and security guards Friday evening. Kids will also take part in on-ice promotions and help with arena entertainment throughout the evening in the crowd.
The Fighting Saints have been holding a social media contest via Facebook, and are in the process of finding a few youngsters to help be a Jr. Radio Announcer, a Jr. Photographer, and give a motivational speech to the team. Fans can submit their best announcer and speech videos, as well as snapshots, to the Fighting Saints Facebook wall by Thursday for a chance to be entered to win. The Jr. Announcer will join the radio broadcast team, conduct a post-game interview, as well as provide a welcome public address announcement in the arena. The Jr. Photographer will carry a camera around the arena and snap photos throughout the evening that will be posted to Facebook for fans to enjoy. One child will have a chance to visit the Fighting Saints locker room, and much like Head Coach and General Manager Jim Montgomery, address the Fighting Saints and prepare them for the game that evening. Full details of the contest are available on facebook.com/fightingsaints.
Y105 has also been conducting on-air contests for children to help assist at ice level, as youngsters have appeared on the airwaves this week stating why they should get a chance to operate the penalty box door as a Jr. Off-Ice Officials.
Entertainment during intermissions will include a race where children will take the ice with their parents. The parents will switch roles with the children and have to race through an obstacle course where they have to neatly fold clothing, put toys away, get into a pair of pajamas, and tuck themselves into bed. The kids will get to experience what most children think an adult's life is (nothing but easy) and have no obstacles and complete the course in the convenience of being pushed in an office chair.
During the evening, Bernie, the Fighting Saints mascot, will have a mini-Bernie roaming the arena with him. Bernie and his younger pal will help judge a coloring contest that adults will participate in throughout the game that evening. Other in-game entertainment includes kid trivia, where one lucky child will answer questions on a variety of children's topics to "earn their allowance." A parent will also be pinned against his or her child in a version of "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader - where the parent and kid will square off in a knowledge completion. Music will be children's themed at times, and their will be a jukebox choice where the crowd gets to choose their favorite child artist's song to be played in the arena.
