Richmond Kickers News Release
Richmond, VA â Dustin Swinehart's goal in overtime led the Richmond Kickers (4-2-3, 15 points) to victory over the Virginia Beach Mariners (2-3-2, 8 points) after a scoreless draw in regulation. Swinehart, the 2003 Charlotte Eagles leading scorer, was on loan tonight for the first time this season. This win designates the Kickers the 2004 James River Cup champion for the sixth consecutive season.
Minute-By-Minute Highlights
6th minute: A high cross from the left flank finds Matt Delicate leaping in the air. He connects with the ball the same time he connects with a defender, but is still able to head the ball towards the goal. The ball flies just outside the right post for a goal kick.
16th minute: David Hayes receives a bouncing ball about 28 yards out. He powerfully volleys the ball waist-high and Nelson is there, but the shot is too strong and it ricochets off his hands and goes out for a corner.
22nd minute: Pato Aguilera, on a free kick about 23 yards out on the right side of the field, bends the ball around the wall, but Pascale dives in the air and punches the ball to his left for the save.
36th minute: Mike Burke receives the ball about 5 yards away from the right side of the arc of the penalty box and feeds it to Matt Delicate, who touches it forward for a shot. Nelson, in perfect form, comes off his line and cuts the angle so that Delicate cannot slot it through, so the shot bounces off Nelson and a Mariners' defender clears it out.
50th minute: Luzak and Knight have a miscommunication in the center of the field just outside of the penalty box and neither go for the ball. Dante Washington swoops in between the two players and obtains possession of the ball. He takes a few small touches forward and tries to shoot, but Pascale is right there to block the shot.
53rd minute: Tony Williams throws the ball in to Mike Burke, who attempts to quickly switch fields with the ball, but Williams steps in the way and gets nailed in the lower abdomen (much lower) with the ball.
97th minute: GOAL Richmond: 1 Virginia Beach: 0 Steve Danbusky tracks back towards his own goal to retrieve a ball sent through by the Kickers. Dustin Swinehart sees his opportunity and chases down an unaware Danbusky. Swinehart gets his foot on the ball and is on his way, with only Nelson in the way. Swinehart takes one touch to his right to get around Nelson, and slots the ball right into the goal for the win.
