RICHMOND, VA - (Thursday, July 31, 2014) - The Richmond Kickers (11-1-9, 42 points) return to USL PRO regular season action this Friday, August 1 when they take on the Wilmington Hammerheads (6-3-8, 26 points). Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. live from Legion Stadium on YouTube.com/RichmondKickers.
The Kickers and the Hammerheads close out a three-game series this Friday after battling to a pair of draws earlier in the season. The two clubs first met in Richmond on June 14 when the Kickers took an early lead on a pair of first half Matthew Delicâte tallies before conceding two goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation for a 2-2 tie. On the return trip later that month, Richmond rallied for a 1-1 draw after Tom Parratt's 60th minute goal was matched by Hugh Roberts to narrow the Kickers' all-time series record advantage to 11-6-8 over their longtime rivals.
The Hammerheads return to Legion Stadium this weekend looking to bounce back from a 2-0 loss in Charlotte one week prior after three consecutive shutouts over Harrisburg, Rochester and Arizona boosted the club to sixth place in the USL PRO standings. Having played just 17 gamest his season, Wilmington kicks off a grueling eight-games-in-four-weeks gauntlet this Friday.
Meanwhile, the Kickers enter Friday's match on the heels of a 2-1 win over the Harrisburg City Islanders last week. Veteran midfielder Luke Vercollone calmly converted the opening goal from the spot when Jason Yeisley drew a foul in the box in the fifth minute and Sascha Görres posted a 35-yard free kick to give the Kickers an early lead before Coady Andrews pulled a goal back with two minutes to spare to avoid the shutout.
Following Friday's road trip, the Kickers return to City Stadium to host the Charlotte Eagles on Saturday, August 9. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. and tickets are on sale now at RichmondKickers.com.
