Richmond Kickers News Release
Richmond, VA - The Richmond Kickers head to Bermuda this weekend for a two-game series, facing USL-2 opponents, Bermuda Hogges on Saturday, May 9th before taking on the Bermuda Football Association's U-23 National Team on Sunday, May 10th. The Kickers return to the University of Richmond Stadium one week later on Friday, May 15th to host the Charlotte Eagles and Faith & Family Night at 7:00 p.m.
The Kickers and the Hogges have met four times over the past two seasons with the Kickers holding a 4-0-0 advantage over the sophomore club. The Kickers face the Hogges for the first time in 2009 after handing them a 7-1 thrashing the last time the teams played at The National Stadium in Bermuda. Forward David Bulow posted his first professional hat trick while midfielders Mike Burke, Luke Vercollone and Sascha Görres added a goal each. Making a cameo appearance on the field, Head Coach Leigh Cowlishaw came off the bench and rounded out the scoreline, recording his first goal for the Kickers since 1998. Bulow and Vercollone each notched a goal in the Kickers 4-1 win over Bermuda one month prior when the two teams met in Richmond last June.
The Hogges host the Kickers Saturday night in the second of a five-game home stand. The teams swap home field advantage when the Hogges travel stateside for a match-up at the University of Richmond Stadium on July 11th. The Kickers will stay an extra day in Bermuda to play the Bermuda Football Association's U-23 National Team on Sunday, May 10th. Working with the Hogges to develop the growth of soccer in Bermuda, the BFA squad is comprised of amateur Bermudian players.
Last Time Out
After two home ties to open the season over the Harrisburg City Islanders and Pittsburgh Riverhounds, the Kickers posted their first win of the season with a 2-0 shutout over the Western Mass Pioneers on the road last weekend. Taking an early lead, Bulow was the first to strike in the 6th minute as scoring duo Mike Burke and Matthew Delicâte connected just after the second half restart to round out the final score. With six saves on the night, goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale preserved the clean sheet.
Meanwhile, Bermuda was just as successful last weekend, coming off their first win of the 2009 campaign. The Hogges handed a 2-1 upset to the Harrisburg City Islanders on a pair of second half goals by Domico Coddington and Antwan Russell.
Team of the Week Honors
Bermuda and Richmond led the USL-2 Team of the Week this week, with three Hogges and three Kickers earning the honors. Coddington took USL-1 Player of the Week title for his offensive efforts in the Hogges' home opening win over Harrisburg. Teaming up with fellow USL-2 Team of the Week honoree Antwon Russell to level the score, Coddington also drew a foul in the box five minutes later, that Russell converted for the win. Defender Omar Shakir was also nominated for his solid defensive play.
Kickers goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale earned Goalkeeper of the Week honors after posting six saves in the 2-0 shutout over Western Mass. Newcomer Yomby William led the Kickers defensive unit while midfielder David Bulow led the attack, notching his second goal of the season over the Pioneers.
