Richmond, VA - (Friday, June 13, 2003) - The Richmond Kickers (5-4-2, 17 points) increased their undefeated streak to four games (3-0-1) with a defeat of the Atlanta Silverbacks (1-6-4, 7 points) 1-0 on Friday night.
The victory marked the third time this season that Richmond has beaten the Silverbacks, including a 2-1 overtime victory last Sunday. Goalkeeper Doug Warren, on loan from DC United, stopped a number of shots late in the game to preserve the 1-0 victory.
Minute-By-Minute Highlights
First Half
4th Minute: Jason Russell picks off a pass and quickly gets the ball to Paul Lekics on the left side of the penalty area. Greg Simmonds is unable to handle the short cross and his attempt goes over the crossbar.
12th Minute: Midfielder Mike Burke gets the ball in the middle of the park. He touches the ball to his right and takes a 23-yard shot that sails just to the right of the goal.
19th Minute: Midfielder Carlos Parra takes a free kick from 20 yards out that rolls harmlessly over the endline left of the goal.
26th Minute: Forward David Testo takes a left-footed shot from 19 yards out that is deflected over the end line.
41st Minute: Defender Erik Ozimek misplays the ball and David Testo is in alone on goalkeeper Bryheem Hancock. Hancock gets a hand to block the ball and the rebound goes ricochets to Jason Russell. Russell's shot on an open net is saved by a sliding Ozimek and the ball is cleared out of danger.
Second Half
65th Minute: Greg Simmonds is unable to get a good shot off of a bouncing pass into the box as the ball goes wide of the far post.
67th Minute: Midfielder Ramon Luna gets off a shot from 19 yards out that is just wide of the right post.
75th Minute: Forward David Testo slips a cross through the box. The ball deflects off two defenders and Paul Lekics comes in and hits a rocket that goalkeeper Bryheem Hancock is just able to get a hand on and he deflects it over the crossbar.
80th Minute: Jordy Broder turns at the top of the box and takes a quick shot but Warren is there to make the save.
81st Minute: GOAL Rob Ukrop gets behind the Silverbacks defense and takes a hard right-footed shot that Hancock makes a great save on. The rebound bounces high in the air towards the back post and forward Kevin Jeffrey knocks the ball into the back of the net. Silverbacks 0, Kickers 1.
84th Minute: Midfielder Carlos Parra receives a great pass from John Barry Nusum that leaves him on the left side of the box all alone. His 9 yard shot is saved by Warren to preserve the 1-0 score.
88th Minute: Off a free kick, Rob Ukrop heads the ball to the center of the 18 yard box where Tony Williams hit a great half-volley that forces Hancockto make a great save and deflect the ball out of bounds.
89th Minute: Off the ensuing corner kick, Jason Russell aims a header towards the goal that is deflected over the cross bar by an Atlanta defender.
90th Minute: Byron Mitchell sends in a long cross from the left sideline but John Barry Nusum's header goes just over the bar.
