Battery loses to Eagles in OT

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery lost to the Charlotte Eagles tonight at Blackbaud Stadium in OT by a score of two goals to one in front of 4,110. Charlotte won the game on a Lee Paul golden-goal in the 91st minute. The Battery drops to 6-2-2, 20 points, the Eagles improve to 2-5-5, 11 points.

Charleston took the lead in the 18th minute. Midfielder, Chris Goos whipped in a free-kick from the far flank. The ball spun across the middle and as it dropped at the edge of the 6-yard box, midfielder, Ted Chronopoulos dove in and headed it home. It was Chronopoulos's second goal of the season.

Charlotte scored the equalizer in the 67th minute from the penalty spot after Battery forward, Josh Henderson was adjudged to have fouled a Charlotte player in the box. Andy McDermott converted the spot-kick, driving the ball past a diving Dust Hudock.

Despite outshooting Charlotte 17-8 the Battery could not convert its numerical advantage. Chronopoulos's shot in injury time almost won the match for the Battery but it was scrambled off the goal-line.

The Eagles scored the winner in the 91st minute. Substitute, midfielder, Jeremy Sorzano played the ball abcross from the near side. The ball was knocked back into the middle by defender, Josh Rife then turned into the goal by substitute forward, Lee Paul. Tomorrow night, both teams travel to Charlotte to conclude the weekend back-to-back series.
