Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Kickers broke a two-game scoreless streak tonight in Western Mass, downing the Pioneers 1-0 in front of a rainy crowd of 1,832 fans. Newcomer Stanley Nyazamba recorded the lone goal of the night on a poor Pioneers clearance, early in the second half.
Few threatening chances were created on either end of the pitch to start the game and it wasn't until the second half restart that a point was put on the board. After Kickers goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale cleared the ball into Pioneers territory, forward David Bulow flicked it into open space where it bounced once on the wet field. A Pioneers defender scrambled after the loose ball and attempted to clear the ball from harm's way, but his awkward angle positioned it into the path of an on-rushing Nyazamba. The rookie midfielder trapped the ball and sent a 25-yard rocket over the outstretched Western Mass goalkeeper, Matt Glaeser, and into the back of the net.
Western Mass applied pressure as the end of the game drew near but a 70th minute header off a corner was deflected off the line by a Kickers defender. With just 10 minutes until time, a Pioneers forward attempted a bicycle kick, inside the six yard box, but he misfired and sent the ball wide.
A yellow card affair resulted in five cautions in the second half, including a pair to Kickers midfielder Ben Hunter, sending him off in the 90th minute.
The Kickers return to the University of Richmond Stadium after a three-game road stand to host the Charlotte Eagles on Saturday, May 24th at 7:00 pm. Join the Kickers for Military Appreciation Night where all active duty and retired military will receive free admission and DoD civilians can purchase $5.00 tickets at the gate. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a chip clip courtesy of Party Perfect.
