Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA â (Tuesday, January 18, 2005) â The USL First Division held its annual College Player Draft today with the Richmond Kickers holding two of the 24 picks. Ranked in reverse order according to the final 2004 regular season standings, the Richmond Kickers held the tenth and twentieth pick positions.
Looking to increase the strength in the midfield, the Kickers chose Sascha Görres with their first round pick, 10th overall, from the University of North Carolina-Pembroke (UNCP). Görres was recently recognized as All-Conference, All-Tournament and first team All-American (NCAA Division II) as well as named to the NSCAA All-Southeast Region squad and the NSCAA/Adidas Scholar All-American squad upon completion of his degree in Business Administration with a 4.00 grade point average. One of only two All-Americans to play for UNCP, Görres holds the school record for career assists with 28 and scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute of the NCAA quarterfinal match that sent UNCP to their first ever Final Four appearance. The 6'1" native of Flensburg, Germany started every game and tallied eight goals and nine assists in 2004.
With the 20th pick overall (second round), the Kickers then selected midfielder/forward Mychal Turpin from the University of Michigan. A 2004 All-Great Lakes Region first team selection, Turpin was a two-time Big Ten Athlete of the Week and was named to the All-Big Ten Conference First Team in 2003 (Second Team in 2004). Turpin is a record holder for career points (85), career goals (33), career shots on goal (91), and co-record holder for points in a single season (33, 2003). The Detroit, Michigan native appeared in 82 games over four seasons, starting 79 and tallied 33 goals and 19 assists for 85 career points.
"The [USL First Division] Draft reflects our immediate need for attacking wide players," comments Head Coach Leigh Cowlishaw. "We identified players that we had an initial interest in and we were fortunately able to select them. We are very pleased with the result."
USL First Division clubs have until February 1, 2005 to conduct compensation negotiations and sign the player to a USL First Division contract. If no agreement is reached, the player becomes a free agent and can enter into negotiations with any other USL team.
