Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - (Friday, March 29, 2013) - The Richmond Kickers announced today the retirement of two veteran players as midfielders Ryan Heins and Ross MacKenzie pursue other opportunities.
Signing with the Kickers prior to the 2011 campaign, Heins quickly made his way onto the lineup, starting 50 of 54 games played and posting over 4,000 minutes over two seasons. Recording six goals and four assists in a Kickers uniform, he finished the 2012 season fifth on the team in scoring while also contributing defensively to eight shutouts on the season.
Originally from Medford, NJ, the 6'1" midfielder made his USL debut in 2008 with USL PRO rival Harrisburg City Islanders, leading the team with seven goals and one assist in 17 appearances. He concluded the 2008 season on loan with the Rochester Rhinos, making 51 appearances with the USL First Division/USSF Division II side over two seasons. A four-year starter at Temple University, Heins notched seven career goals and 11 assists and capped his collegiate career by earning All-Atlantic 10 Second Team honors his senior season.
Currently acting as the Richmond Kickers ADP and U9 Director, MacKenzie makes the transition from field to front office after totaling 43 appearances with the Kickers pro team over four seasons and notching a pair of assists during the Kickers historic run to the U.S. Open Cup Semifinals in 2011. Before signing with the Kickers in 2009, MacKenzie registered four goals and four assists during his rookie professional season with the Wilmington Hammerheads, joining the Carolina RailHawks of the USL First Division in 2008.
A 2006 graduate of Old Dominion University, MacKenzie captained the Monarchs to the Sweet 16 his senior year. Finishing third on the team in points with 13 that season, the native of Paisley, Scotland tallied 14 goals and added 13 assists for 41 points during his collegiate career. Selected to the All-District, All-Metro, All-Region and All-State First Teams as a senior at Clover Hill High School in Midlothian, VA, MacKenzie notched 29 goals and added 20 assists over two seasons.
In a sweeping move to prepare for the 2013 season, the Richmond Kickers also announced the release of midfielders Gerson Dos Santos and Bobby Foglesong.
