January 21, 2013 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - (Monday, January 21, 2013) - The Richmond Kickers coaching staff heads to Bradenton, Florida this weekend to attend the 2013 USL PRO Combine. Representing the Kickers, newly appointed assistant coach Sascha Görres will attend the three-day event at the world-class facilities at IMG Academy to scout over 100 of the top players from North American and oversees.
With 12 players returning from the 2012 roster, the Kickers coaching staff will be seeking to fill several open roster spots at this year's combine, with the priority focused on adding offensive firepower in 2013.
"There are a lot of talented, young players attending the USL Pro Combine," commented Görres. "Next to our own combine and preseason training invitations, this will be the best opportunity for us to search for players that fit into our team and help lead us to a successful 2013 season."
USL National Technical Director Peter Mellor will oversee a comprehensive curriculum that challenges participants while providing coaches with the proper environment for evaluation. To date, more than 150 participants have gone on to sign professional contracts with USL, Major League Soccer and international teams since the event's debut in 2006. Past beneficiaries include 2012 USL PRO Rookie of the Year Jose Cuevas, 2012 USL PRO Rookie of the Year finalist Bryce Taylor and 2011 USL PRO Rookie of the Year Luke Mulholland.
The USL PRO Combine precedes the Kickers 14th annual Pro Tryouts, scheduled for February 1-3, 2013 in Richmond, VA. A select number of eligible college seniors, qualified free agents and talented amateur players that are seeking a professional contract will be invited to participate in three days of intense training and scrimmages in front of the Kickers technical staff at the Kickers state-of-the-art training facility Ukrop Park.
Past Kickers trials have produced such prominent players as Clyde Simms (New England Revolution, D.C. United and U.S. Men's National Team), Ronnie Pascale (Three-time USL-2 Goalkeeper of the Year), Tim Brown (New Zealand National Team) and Robert Ssejjemba (2006 USL-2 MVP and Ugandan National Team). Interested players should please submit an application and registration fee. Space is limited and applications will be reviewed on a first come, first served basis.
