Richmond Kickers News Release
LUDLOW, MA - The Richmond Kickers claimed their first win of the regular season, shutting out the Western Mass Pioneers 2-0 on the road. Taking an early lead, Kickers midfielder David Bulow was the first to strike in the 6th minute. Scoring duo Mike Burke and Matthew Delicâte connected just after the second half restart to round out the final score. With six saves on the night, goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale preserved the clean sheet. The Kickers head to Bermuda next Saturday, May 9th before returning to the University of Richmond Stadium for a four-game home stand beginning on Friday, May 15th.
The Kickers grabbed an early lead when rookie midfielder Gerson dos Santos played a through ball to an onrushing Bulow in the 6th minute. As Pioneers goalkeeper Matt Jones came off his line, Bulow chipped the ball over him and into an empty net.
Western Mass found their first scoring opportunity in the 18th minute when midfielder Mark Nerkowski fired a 25-yard rocket that sailed over the crossbar. Three minutes later, Burke retaliated but his attempt from inside the box found the same fate.
Not to be denied again, the Kickers doubled their lead within the first minute of the second half when Burke delivered a well-placed cross from the left side of the box. Splitting two defenders, Delicâte settled the ball with his first touch and tucked it into the left corner past the diving âkeeper.
Western Mass attempted to cut the deficit in the 62nd minute when Adrian Dubois struck from 20 yards out to the near post. Kickers goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale was in the right place at the right time and smothered the ball as it headed towards the right corner.
As the match neared completion, Kickers second half substitute Adrian Bumbut placed a cross from the right side. Finding Delicâte in the air, just eight yards out, his point-blank header narrowly missed the target.
The Kickers return to the University of Richmond Stadium on Friday, May 15th when they host the Charlotte Eagles and Faith & Family Night at 7:00 p.m. Donate new and gently used clothing and soccer equipment to benefit the children of Gulu, Northern Uganda and purchase tickets at the gate for just $5.00.
