Kickers Defend Six-Game Undefeated Streak

RICHMOND, VA – (Wednesday, May 19, 2004) – Currently ranked first in the A-League Standings, the Richmond Kickers (3-1-3, 12 points) look to continue their six-game undefeated streak this Sunday, May 23rd at 6:00 p.m. in an early kickoff versus the Atlanta Silverbacks (1-2-1, 4 points) at the University of Richmond Stadium. The first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a 2004 team poster.

The Kickers take on the Silverbacks after returning to Richmond from Puerto Rico with four points (0-0 draw, 3-0 win). Richmond will be the second leg of a back-to-back weekend for the Silverbacks who will meet the Virginia Beach Mariners the night before. Overall, the Kickers hold a 12-2-1 record versus the Silverbacks.

"It is important to continue our momentum this Sunday," says Richmond Kickers head coach Leigh Cowlishaw. "Atlanta will be a difficult opponent and one we cannot underestimate, as they are full of confidence from their Charleston win."

Players to Watch

Kickers: Forward David Hayes (#23) earned Team of the Week honors for his goal and assist in the 3-0 win versus the Islanders last week. Hayes is one of four Kickers players to be ranked in the Top 20 point leaders in the A-League and is also tied for second in the league in assists with two. Joey Worthen (#18) is currently leading the Kickers in points (3 goals, 1 assist) and is tied for third in the A-League for points with seven. Worthen is tied for second in the league in goals with three and has earned points in four of the past seven matches. Rookie forward Matthew Delicâte (#7) is currently second on the team and tied for fifth in the A-League in points with six (2 goals, 2 assists) and tied for second in the league in assists with two.

Silverbacks: Former Kicker (1997 – 4 goals, 1 assist, 9 points) forward Mangea "Mac" Cozier (#11) is currently leading the Silverbacks in goals and points with five (2 goals, 1 assist). He is also tied for eighth in the A-League standings in points. Forward Gary Brooks (#19) is leading the Silverbacks and is ranked second in the league in assists with two. New head coach David Vaudreuil, a former MLS player with two professional championships under his belt, has helped reform a team that struggled a year ago.

Richmond Kickers Future/Destiny Update

The Richmond Kickers Future (1-0-2) brought home their first win of the 2004 season in a 2-1 effort at West Virginia Chaos last weekend after a 1-1 draw versus the Raleigh CASL Elite in the 2004 home opener. Donny Smith is leading the future in goals and points (2 goals, 4 points).

The undefeated Future will take on the Carolina Dynamo on Friday, May 21st at 4:30 p.m. at Cary Street Field on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Following the home match, the Future will travel to the Chesapeake Athletic Dragons on Saturday, May 22nd at 7:30 p.m. The results from the back-to-back matches will determine if the Future will advance to the next round of the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Following the Future's match on Friday, May 21st, the Richmond Kickers Destiny will take on the Carolina Dynamo Women in the second leg of a doubleheader at 7:00 p.m. at Cary Street Field (VCU). The Destiny looks for their first win in history this weekend after a 0-1 in the home opener by the 2003 W-League Champion Hampton Roads Piranhas last weekend.
