Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery travels to Puerto Rico this weekend for a two-match series versus the expansion Puerto Rico Islanders. The first game is set for 8:00 PM Friday evening; the second match kicks off at 5:00 PM Sunday afternoon. Both games will be broadcast live on Newsradio 730 WSC and via webcast at www.charlestonbattery.com.
This is the Battery's first visit to Puerto Rico; the Islanders come to Charleston twice later in the summer with matches scheduled for Sunday, June 20 (6 PM) and Saturday, July 3 (7:30 PM).
Puerto Rico is winless so far in its inaugural A-League campaign. Last weekend the Islanders tied the Richmond Kickers 0-0 then lost 3-0 to the Kickers in the second match of the series. Both games were played in Puerto Rico.
The Islanders are coached by Victor Hugo Barros. A native of Puerto Rico Barros played professionally in Brazil for Cortiva, Gremio and Palmeiras. He was also a member of the Puerto Rico National Team.
The Puerto Rico Islanders play at Juan Ramon Loubriel stadium, in Bayoman, just outside of the capital, San Juan. This is the first USL franchise to be located outside of the USA or Canada.
Veteran Charleston Battery striker, Paul Conway is expected to make the trip down to Puerto Rico. Conway has missed the last four games through injury.
Simmonds Named A-League Player of the Week
Charleston Battery striker Greg Simmonds has been named the A-League Player of the Week following his three goals in two matches last week. Simmonds scored twice in last Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Virginia Beach Mariners. He scored again on Saturday in the 2-2 tie with the Atlanta Silverbacks. Simmonds leads the A-League in scoring with four goals in six games played.
This is the second A-League Player of the Week award for Simmonds in 2004.
Simmonds began his pro-career in 1999 with the Hershey Wildcats where he scored 16 goals and added six assists for 38 points, and was named A-League Rookie of the Year.
A native of Jamaica, Simmonds spent two seasons at Hershey before joining MLS's Miami Fusion in 2001, recording two assists in nine games played. While with Miami in 2001 Simmonds played two games on-loan for Charleston, scoring one goal (07/27/01 vs. Cincinnati).
Simmonds spent the 2002 season with the Rochester Raging Rhinos where he was twice named A-League Player of the Week. Simmonds' career totals include 42 goals and 22 assists for 106 points in five professional seasons; he has represented Jamaica at the full National Team level.
