Richmond Kickers News Release
SILVER SPRING, MD - The Richmond Kickers celebrate a 3-0 Independence Day victory over the Real Maryland Monarchs, gaining three points to climb into third place in the USL standings. Midfielder Adrian Bumbut netted his first professional goal on an assist from defender Kelvin Jones to open scoring in Maryland. Later Bumbut assisted on a Freddie Smith tally early in the second half, before Stanley Nyazamba connected with Mike Burke to close out the night.
Bumbut gave the visiting team the lead in the 21st minute when he received the ball from Jones at midfield. He carried the ball forward to challenge the defense and cut inside to attempt a shot from 20 yards to the near post. There was little the unsuspecting goalkeeper could do to make the stop as Bumbut's strike slipped through the back line and into the target.
Not long after the second half kicked off, the Kickers extended their lead to 2-0 when Bumbut crossed the ball from the left side, finding Smith at the top of the 18 yard box. Smith took one touch to elude the defender and fired a rocket into the back of the net.
The Monarch's looked dangerous in the 67th minute when they nearly missed on a free kick. Midfielder Dennis Alas Morales lined up well-positioned free kick from 25 yards and unleashed a shot over the defensive wall but Kickers goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale made a leaping save.
Maryland did not relent on their attack and attempted to narrow the margin again minutes later. This time, the ball was swung into the box, off of a corner kick from the right side. Forward William Brindley won the ball in the air and drove a determined header on goal but Pascale came up big again with a save to preserve the clean sheet.
Richmond sealed their victory in the 78th minute when midfielder Luke Vercollone won the ball on the right side and carried it down the flank. He played the ball inside to Burke who attempted a shot, drawing the Monarch's goalkeeper Emilio Zalaya off his line. With Nyazamba positioned at the penalty spot, he tapped the ball into the open net for the third and final tally of the night.
The Richmond Kickers cap off their six-game road stand in Bermuda on Sunday, facing the Hogges at 3:00 pm EST. The Kickers return home on Saturday, July 12th to host the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Gifts For Gulu Night. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 pm at the University of Richmond Stadium. Bring your new and gently used clothing and sports equipment to benefit the children of Gulu, Northern Uganda and purchase $5.00 tickets at the gate. Visit RichmondKickers.com for more information.
