Richmond Kickers News Release
Richmond, VA â The Richmond Kickers (7-3-3, 24 points) shutout their lone Western Conference foe, the Milwaukee Wave United (1-7-1, 4 points) by a margin of two goals. After a scoreless first half, Richmond's Mike Burke earned a red card due to two cautions leaving the Kickers a man down for the majority of the second half. The deficit did not affect the Kickers as rookie McColm Cephas and Joey Worthen both came away with goals late in the game.
A scoreless first half found both Richmond and Milwaukee back-and-forth down the field, leaving few scoring opportunities. Richmond's Burke dominated early in the game with a corner kick in the second minute. Defender Peter Luzak was ready six yards from the goal and sent a powerful header just over the crossbar. Burke took advantage of another corner kick in the eleventh minute, sending a short pass to David Hayes. Luzak was in scoring position again and made a valiant effort, once more driving the ball over the goal. Milwaukee took control midway through the first half when goalkeeper Jeff Richey saved a dangerous shot on goal in the 26th minute from a free kick 29 yards out. Milwaukee forward, Johnny Torres earned a free kick in the 30th minute 18 yards from the goal but shot high and was unable to get the ball to the back of the net.
The second half added excitement to the 0-0 draw. Torres warranted a penalty kick in the 61st minute after a collision with Richmond goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale, causing both an injury. Although Pascale had taken a blow to the jaw, he was able to stay on the field and made a heroic save, blocking Greg Howes' penalty kick in the 68th minute. Richmond continued to control the second half as rookie forward McColm Cephas subbed in for Hayes. Twelve minutes later, Cephas scored the game winning goal for Richmond with a header from a free kick earned by Paul Lekics. Lekics earned a second assist in the 90th minute after passing the ball from mid-field to Worthen who shot and scored from ten yards out.
