Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Frederick dispatched Lynchburg 3-2 on Thursday night at Harry Grove Stadium to salvage a split in the four-game series with the Hillcats. Lynchburg will travel to Potomac for a three-game weekend series. Game one is scheduled for a 7:05 start on Friday night.
The Keys seized an early lead with a string of clutch hits in the bottom of the second. After Hillcats starter Paul Mildren retired the first two Frederick batters, Billy Rowell ripped a double to left field. Caleb Joseph followed with an RBI triple that scored Rowell. Bobby Stevens knocked in Joseph with an RBI single that gave Frederick a 2-0 advantage.
Frederick added to its lead in the bottom of the third. Pedro Florimon Jr. socked a one-out double to left field. Following a Tyler Henson strikeout, Brandon Waring delivered an RBI single that plated Florimon Jr. and extended the Keys' lead to 3-0.
Lynchburg struck back in the top of the fifth. Kris Watts doubled to lead off the frame. A passed ball by Joseph enabled Watts to advance to third base. Jared Keel drove in Watts with a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 game.
The Hillcats cut into the Frederick lead in the sixth. Jose De Los Santos opened the frame with a leadoff walk and promptly stole second base with Jordy Mercer batting. After Mercer struck out, Pedro Alvarez belted an RBI double that scored De Los Santos and reduced the deficit to 3-2.
Lynchburg's attempts at a comeback were thwarted after the sixth as a trio of Frederick relievers - Cliff Flagello, Brett Bordes and Luis Lebron - combined to toss three scoreless innings and seal the Keys' victory.
Frederick starter Pedro Beato (2-3) earned the win. Mildren (1-4) was charged with the loss for the Hillcats. Lebron picked up his seventh save of the season.
With the win, Frederick improved to 19-21 while Lynchburg fell to 25-15. The Hillcats remain in first place in the Carolina League's Northern Division by a half-game over Potomac.
The Hillcats and P-Nats will face off in a three-game weekend series in Potomac. Game one is slated for a 7:05 p.m. start Friday night.
