Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, MD - The Frederick Keys (20-22) bottom of the ninth inning comeback attempt fell three runs too short, as the Lynchburg Hillcats (25-17) took their second straight game from the Frederick Keys, winning 8-5.

The Keys struck first, but the Hillcats struck the hardest, pounding out eight runs on 13 hits to extend their Northern Division lead to 5.0 games and moving to 5-0 against the Keys on the season.

The Keys got on the board early, aided by a Nate Spears lead-off single in the first. Jarod Rine moved Spears to third with a double to right field, before Nick Markakis' ground out to shortstop Javier Guzman allowed Spears to put the Keys in front 1-0.

The Hillcats tied the score in the top of the second inning as Guzman singled to drive in Mike McCuistion. Lynchburg would extend their lead in the third inning as Bobby Kingsbury drove in Pat Magness with a double, before Adam Boeve scored on a Finch wild pitch.

In the fourth inning Mario Delgado homered to right field, his ninth of the season, to bring the Keys within a run.

The Hillcats scored three in the fifth inning as Magness led off with a home run, and Bobby Kingsbury hit a two-run blast of his own two batters later, giving the Hillcats a 6-2 advantage.

Bryan Bass hit his third home run, a solo shot to center field, in the bottom half of the fifth inning, but the Keys could not keep pace with the Hillcats offense, as they put two runs on the board in the seventh inning with McCuistion and Guzman each driving in runs.

The Keys threatened in the bottom of the ninth scoring two runs, as Bryan Bass scored on a passed ball and Delgado drove in a run on a two-out single. The Hillcats brought on Josh Sharpless, who retired Josh McCurdy, to earn his third save of the season.

Finch (2-3) took the loss allowing six runs on 10 hits over 5.0 innings. Fredy Deza tossed a scoreless inning, striking out three in his second appearance since returning from the disabled list.

Patrick O'Brien (3-4) earned the win tossing 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. Sharpless earned the save in a third of an inning.

NOTES: During Saturday's game Barbi Noel of Frederick, MD accepted a marriage proposal from David Upton of Frederick, MD after the seventh inning.

The Keys play the final game of their three game series with Lynchburg on Sunday afternoon, as LHP Richard Stahl will take on LHP Derrick Van Dusen at 2:05 p.m. Sunday is Sunday Family Fun Day sponsored by The Washington Post as fans will be allowed to play catch on the field prior to the game and all the kids in attendance will be allowed to run the bases after the game. Joe Nemechek's Cellular One Show Car will also be at Harry Grove Stadium on Sunday. Sunday is also Clarke County (VA) Keys for Reading Day sponsored by the Sylvan Learning Center and BP Solar.
