Frederick Keys News Release
WILMINGTON, DE - After a spotless pitching performance, the Keys blew a three-run lead in the bottom of the ninth after dropping two routine fly balls which allowed three unearned runs to score, ultimately losing to Wilmington in stunning fashion, 4-3.
Already allowing one run in the ninth and runners on second and third with one out, a fly ball to centerfield was dropped by Trent Mummey to bring in a run, which cut the Keys' lead to one at 3-2.
After an intentional walk loaded the bases, the very next batter, Cheslor Cuthbert, put a fly ball to left field and again, the Keys dropped it. This time it went off the glove of Jeremy Nowak, which allowed the tying and winning runs to score.
Overall this season through seven games, the Keys have committed 17 errors and have now allowed 13 unearned runs to score.
The loss puts the Keys at 3-4 on the year while Wilmington improves to 3-4.
For the Keys starting pitcher Scott Copeland, he went a second straight game without allowing an earned run, going 5.2 innings and giving up just four hits while collecting five strikeouts.
Relief pitcher Clay Schrader continued to keep the Blue Rocks scoreless, going 2.1 innings without giving up a run and striking out four.
But with the Blue Rocks getting three unearned runs to cross the plate against closer David Walters, the Keys' shockingly found themselves on the losing end.
The Keys initially grabbed the lead in the top of the sixth when an Aaron Baker double scored Bobby Stevens to take a 1-0 lead.
Two innings later, Baker provided the Keys a 3-0 lead when he hit his second homerun in as many days, belting a pitch over the right field wall to score two runs and provide the Keys some breathing room.
Yet the insurance wouldn't matter as the Keys lost in stunning fashion in the bottom of the ninth.
The Keys will look to get back on track tomorrow against Wilmington when Mike Wright (1-0, 0.00 ERA) takes on Yordano Ventura (0-0, 2.45 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
