Frederick Keys News Release
It was a night of miss opportunities for the Frederick Keys. They hit into four double plays, were picked off three times and left ten men on base. Most importantly, the Keys let the Salem Avalanche hang around long enough and it came back to hurt them. With a two-run single in the ninth from Cesar Quintero, Salem defeated Frederick tonight, 2-1.
Avalanche starter, Douglas Arguello, struggled all night. Through the first five innings, the southpaw surrndered four hits, four walks and hit two batters. The Keys had nothing to show for it, though. In the sixth, Arguello walked the first two batters of the inning and was pulled.
Reliever Bryan Hallberg came into the game. He gave up a bunt-single to Chris Amador. A batter later, Bill Rowell hit an RBI-single to give the Keys the early lead. That's all Frederick would get, though. They left the bases loaded in the sixth.
Frederick starter Kyle Schmidt was nearly perfect tonight. The right-hander threw seven shutout innings. He didn't surrender a hit. Schmidt did walk three, and he struck out six.
Brian Parker came into the game to start the eighth. He gave up a leadoff single to Greg Buchanan to break-up the no-hitter.
Parker gave up a single to Jhon Florentino to start the ninth. He was pulled for Ryan Rodriguez. The left-handed reliever then walked Mark Ori. Nick Moresi came in to pinch-run for Ori. Colin DeLome then laid down a sacrafice bunt. Rodriguez intentionally walked Tim Torres to load the bases for struggling hitter Cesar Quintero. He came through, driving a single to leftfield. Florentino scored easily. Moresi was being waved around to score. The leftfielder Todd Davison couldn't come up with the ball cleanly, allowing the winning run to cross home.
Jason Dominguez threw 2.2 scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win. His record's now 5-4. Rodriguez took the loss, dropping to 5-2.
The Keys head to Lynchburg for a three-game series with the Hillcats, starting tomorrow at 7:05.
The Keys will return to Frederick for the final series of the season on Friday, August 28th against the Winston-Salem Warthogs. For ticket information, contact our box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
