Salem RidgeYaks News Release

Salem, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, used a two-run single in the ninth inning Sunday night to outdo the Frederick Keys 2-1 on Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. The Avalanche (24-38) did not post its first hit until the eighth inning in the series-ending victory against the Keys (26-37).

With zero hits at the outset of the bottom of the eighth, Salem sent Greg Buchanan to the plate to break the drought against incoming reliever Brian Parker. The second baseman shipped an 0-1 pitch over second baseman Miguel Abreu into right field for a single. Buchanan, though, was stranded at third base.

Still trailing by a 1-0 score as the bottom of the ninth began, the Avs got a single to right from Jhon Florentino that ended Parker's night. With Ryan Rodriguez in, Mark Ori walked and came out for pinch-runner Nick Moresi. The next batter, Collin DeLome succeeded in a sacrifice bunt attempt to put runners at second and third for Tim Torres. Frederick intentionally walked the third baseman to bring up Cesar Quintero. After a first-pitch ball, Quintero socked a single to left that scored both Florentino and Moresi without a throw and the celebration was on. It was Quintero's second game-winning hit after the seventh this year and his first RBI single July 28th.

The Avs' bullpen kept the game tight with three innings of scoreless relief from the tandem of Bryan Hallberg and Jason Dominguez. The only Frederick run came home prior to Douglas Arguello's departure on a Billy Rowell RBI single in the sixth.

For Salem, it was the team's 10th victory in 35 one-run games this season. The Avs won their first four in that category in '08.

The home schedule has concluded and the Avs hit the road for four games in Potomac before closing the year in Lynchburg. Monday's game is scheduled for a 7:05 start with righty Corey Bass facing Potomac's Hassan Pena.
