Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, MD - Looking for their first series win against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Keys instead fell flat in a 9-3 loss in the rubber match.
Using an early 4-1 lead, the Pelicans were able to surge past Frederick to go 14-6 against them this year.
After the Pelicans' early lead, the Keys were able to pull within two in the seventh, but four runs in the eighth inning put the final nail in the coffin, allowing Myrtle Beach to win in convincing fashion.
The loss puts Frederick at 23-25 in the second half of the year as they lose their grip on first place as Wilmington was able to win, supplanting the Keys from the top of the standings.
The Pelicans jumped on Keys starting pitcher Trent Howard early, as in the first inning with two outs and one runner on, Brett Nicholas lined a double into the right-center field gap, bringing Myrtle Beach a 1-0 lead.
Although the Keys would answer in next inning to tie the score at one, the Pelicans responded with three runs of their own in the third to take a 4-1 lead.
The big inning started with a leadoff walk to Odubel Herrera, which was followed by a two-run home run from Teodoro Martinez, to make it 3-1 Myrtle Beach. The next batter, Hanser Alberto, doubled which set up an RBI single from Brett Nicholas to make it 4-1 without any outs made in the inning. But Howard would promptly get his defense to turn a double play and he retired 13 hitters in a row from there.
That allowed the Keys to get back into it as Tyler Townsend hit his first home run as a Key this year, drilling a pitch over the right field wall to bring the Keys to within two, as they trailed just 5-3.
But reliever Oscar Melendez allowed Myrtle Beach to put the game away as they scored four runs in the eighth to take a commanding 9-3 lead.
The Keys will look to bounce back on the road as they travel to Zebulon, North Carolina to take on the Carolina Mudcats in a three-game set.
LHP Matt Bywater (0-1, 5.21 ERA) will be on the mound for Frederick and he'll take on RHP Michael Goodnight of Carolina.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 PM and live coverage starts at 6:55 PM on 1450-AM The Source and online at WTHU.org.
