Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Cedar Rapids Kernels announced Tuesday that four of its ballplayers have been assigned to playoff-bound teams in the Anaheim Angels organization.

Keystone combination Erick Aybar and Alberto Callaspo have been assigned to Rancho Cucamonga of the California League. Pitchers Abel Moreno and Ramon Reyes have been reassigned to Provo of the Pioneer League.

Both Aybar and Callaspo were on the Midwest League postseason all-star team, Aybar at shortstop and Callaspo at second base. Callaspo was the Midwest League batting champion (.327) and led the league in hits (168) and runs scored (86). He also tied for the league lead in doubles (38). His 168 hits are a modern day (since 1949) Cedar Rapids club record.

Aybar finished fifth in the league in batting (.308). He was fourth in hits (153), tied for fourth in runs scored (83) and was second in triples (10). He also stole a team-high 32 bases.

Aybar and Callaspo will back up last year's Kernels double play combo – Tommy Murphy and Justin Turner – at Rancho Cucamonga. The Quakes won the California League's Southern Division first-half championship. Their playoff opener is Saturday, Sept. 6.

Moreno was 1-1 with a 1.62 ERA for the Kernels in three starts after being promoted from Provo. In 16.2 innings, he allowed 15 hits and three runs and struck out 15. He was 10-0 at Provo before his promotion. Moreno was named to the Pioneer League postseason all-star team.

Reyes was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in four relief appearances for the Kernels. In 5.1 innings he allowed two hits and struck out four.

Provo won both halves in the Pioneer League's Southern Division to qualify for the playoffs.
