Kelowna Falcons News Release
Kelowna, BC: The Kelowna Falcons won their 20th game of the year on Monday night with a 5-3 win over the Bellingham Bells.
The Falcons jump out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning after a bases loaded walk to Tucker Alexander.
The Bells would tie it and take the lead 2-1 in the fifth, before extending their lead to 3-1 in the top half of the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth and after another bases loaded walk to Troy Conyers pushed the score to 3-2, Greg Friesen hit a two out, two run single to bring home the tying and go ahead runs. They would be Friesen's 20th and 21st RBIs of the year. The Falcons would tack on another run in the eighth after a third bases loaded walk to Brock Slavin.
Falcons' starter Phil Maton records his second win of the summer after throwing six innings, allowing three runs and striking out just one. Juan Padilla picks up his second save of the year.
Six Bells pitchers struggled to find the strike zone, walking 10 Falcons hitters and hitting four of them. Will Ballowe ultimately records the loss, his first of the summer.
The Falcons (20-15) who won just 19 games last year, host the Bells (21-13) again on Tuesday night. The Falcons trail the Bells by 1.5 games in the race for the final playoff spot in the East Division, as just the top two teams make it. The win also moves the Falcons within 4.5 games of idle Wenatchee.
The Falcons and Bells play each other seven more times this season as the race for the playoffs heat up. Tuesday night's game is set for 6:35pm and the first 250 fans through the gates will receive a pack of complimentary Falcons baseball cards. Gates open at 5:30pm.
Earlier in the day Falcons pitcher Brandon Marris earned his second WCL Player of the Week honour this summer for his performance this past Friday night at Wenatchee. The junior right-hander tossed 8.2 scoreless innings while only allowing four hits and striking out six to earn the 5-0 win. Marris leads the league with six wins and is 6-0 with 33 strikeouts (6th highest in WCL) over 46 innings pitched. Marris' 1.96 ERA is fourth lowest in the league.
