Sanford Mainers News Release

SANFORD, Maine - The Sanford Mainers met the Keene SwampBats on Saturday night at Goodall Park. In a back-and-forth low scoring affair, the SwampBats were able to scratch across the de facto game-winning run in the top of the ninth for a 3-2 win.

Kyle McKernan (Virginia Tech) took the ball for the Mainers in the game and worked a solid five innings. McKernan was able to get around five walks with six strikeouts, allowing one unearned run and three hits in a no-decision.

Sanford opened the scoring in the second inning when Freddy Rojas Jr. (UT-Rio Grande Valley) scored from second on an error by the first baseman. Keene responded back to tie the game at one in the next half inning.

Jacob Ciccone (Lafayette) pitched in relief for Sanford, and allowed one unearned run in his two innings while striking out three. Brian Craven (Davidson) followed and took the losing decision, after 1.1 innings while striking out two and walking two. Gavin Hinchliffe (Delaware) threw to the final two batters, giving up a hit and gaining a strikeout.

The only other Mainers run came in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Mitch Moralez (Utah Valley) to score Cam Ridley (Eastern Kentucky) to retake the lead. The SwampBats were able to re-tie it in the sixth on a double.

Keene won the game with a two-out RBI single in the ninth to hold on to the 3-2 win.

Sanford will take on the North Shore Navigators in a doubleheader tomorrow at Goodall Park.
