Keene Swamp Bats News Release
It was a low scoring affair Wednesday night when the Swamp Bats travelled to play the New Bedford Bay Sox as Keene came away with a 2-1 victory.
The Bay Sox helped the Swamp Bats on offense as they committed three errors on the day and both of the Keene runs came across the plate unearned.
In the top of the third inning, Keene was able to walk twice with two outs and bring up Larry Crisler to the plate, who grounded a ball to the Bay Sox third baseman Rowdy Andrews who bobbled it and threw the ball home in anticipation of Shane Matheny running past third base. Jake Friar, the Bay Sox catcher then threw down to third base and sailed it over Andrews head which lead to the Swamp Bats first run.
Keene starting pitcher Mike Geannelis dazzled as he allowed only three hits and no runs with four strikeouts through six innings pitched.
The Swamp Bats would add to their lead in the top of the eighth inning on another unearned run, after Brad Witkowski reached on another error by Andrews and then would score all the way from first on an RBI double by Ryan Karl and Keene had a 2-0 lead heading to the bottom of the eighth.
The Bay Sox threatened late in the game scoring in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single by Jayson Sullivan that scored T.J. Dixon to cut the lead to 2-1 in favor of Keene.
Zach Willeman would come on to pitch in the ninth inning for Keene and sent down the Bay Sox in order for the save and the Swamp Bats would hang on to win 2-1.
Keene improves to 4-12 on the season and is in action Thursday night at Alumni Field when they will host the Ocean State Waves, with first pitch at 6:30.
