Keene advances to Western Division Championship Series behind Mayberry's stellar performance

KEENE, NH - Right-handed pitcher Whit Mayberry (Alexandria, VA/Virginia) hurled six scoreless innings and struck out a game-high nine batters to guide the Keene Swamp Bats into the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) Western Division Championship Series with a 6-1 win over the Danbury Westerners on Friday night at Alumni Field in front of 1,085 fans.

Keene hosts Holyoke in game one of the Western Division Championships Series tomorrow night at Alumni Field with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 pm. The Blue Sox swept Vermont to advance to the Western Division Championship Series.

Mayberry earned his first win of the postseason scattering just four hits in his outing. The right-hander did not issue a walk and struck out a batter in every inning but the fourth. Sam Eagleson (Reading, PA/John Hopkins) suffered the loss on three-and-two-thirds innings of work, six hits, three runs (all earned), one walk and two punchouts.

Scoreless after three full innings of play, Swamp Bats first baseman Brett Barrett (Keene, NH/Southern Maine) drove home a pair of runs on a clutch two-out double down the left field line for a 2-0 advantage. Michael Burruss (Marietta, GA/Georgia Southern) followed and ripped an RBI single to left field plating Barrett from second for a 3-0 lead.

Keene tacked on three more runs over the next two innings to close out the contest.

In the fifth, the Swamp Bats scored two runs on two separate fielding errors and Kevin Brown (Northborough, MA/Bryant) made it 6-0 in the sixth inning with a triple down the right field line scoring teammate Curt Powell (Knoxville, TN/Georgia) who singled and a stole a base in the frame.

Danbury broke up the Swamp Bats shutout bid in the top of the ninth inning as shortstop Jake Gronsky (Danville, PA/Monmouth) lined a double into left centerfield with two outs. Timothy Flight (Portsmouth, RI/Southern NH) held the Westerners to just one run stranding two runners in scoring position by striking out Tanner Krietemeier (Castle Rock, CO/Nebraska) for the final out of the game.

David Mahoney (Colchester, CT/UConn) pitched one scoreless inning of relief for Keene yielding just one hit, no walks and two strikeouts). Flight went two giving up one run (earned), two hits, one walk and four strikeouts.

Powell, Brown and May all collected two-hit games for the Swamp Bats while Chase Butler (Rome, GA/Georgia Tech) had Danbury's only multi-hit performance of the night.
