Arkansas Diamonds News Release
Eight was enough for the Memphis Xplorers to make it two in a row over their once unbeatable opponent, the Arkansas Twisters.
Memphis was eight for eight in red zone scoring opportunities, while Arkansas was just three of five, and the Xplorers (8-6) sent over 7900 Twisters fans home with a 64-46 loss.
The first quarter was electrifying af2 football at its best as both teams took turns scoring off big plays. The Twisters began the scoring when Travis Motley hit Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Game Kevin Williams on a 24 yard touchdown score. Memphis took just three plays to answer when US Army Ironman of the Game Ryan Karr scored on a 16 yard pass play from Michael Wall. Arkansas went up again on a 31 yard touchdown from Motley to Korea McKay. But Marc Gill missed the extra point, and Kevin Prentiss ran the ensuing kickoff 55 yards for the touchdown to give Memphis a one point lead. Kevin Williams answered with a 55 yard kickoff return for a touchdown of his own, and Arkansas led 19-14.
Memphis took the lead for good when Prentiss caught a 28 yard pass from Wall to go up 21-19, and the Twisters never got any closer than two points.
Darnell Small scored from three yards out to pull Arkansas to within 28-26, but Memphis answered just 30 seconds later to head to the locker room with a 34-26 lead at halftime.
Karr and Prentiss each caught two more touchdowns in second half, and Steven Green added a 35 yard field goal.
It's the second time Memphis has beat Arkansas this year. Memphis entered the 2004 season 0-5 against the Twisters all-time.
For the night, Karr finished with 6 catches for 96 yards and three touchdowns. Prentiss caught 6 catches for 93 yards and three touchdowns, while Wall passed for 262 yards and 7 touchdowns. ADT Defensive Player of the Game Kenzaki Jones had an interception.
Kevin Williams shined once again as a receiver and kick returner with 7 catches for 94 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 7 kickoff returns for 196 yards and a touchdown. He could have had more, but took over the quarterback duties in the fourth quarter when Motley went down with a leg injury. Williams passed for a touchdown, making him the first player in Twisters history to have a pass, catch, and return for touchdowns. Motley finished the night 14 of 23 for 154 yards passing and four touchdowns.
The Twisters return to action next Saturday when they face Rio Grande Valley.
