Laredo Law News Release
ESTERO, Florida âThe Laredo Law were devastated by injuries to both quarterbacks on Saturday night as the Florida Firecats rang up a 67-17 victory at Germain Arena. The Law drop to 3-11, while Florida improves to 9-5. The Law returns home for their final home game of the year this coming Saturday against the Wichita Stealth. The Law opened the game with a successful 43-yard field goal try by Brian Hegnauer for a quick 3-0 lead. The Firecats answered as QB Ken Mastrole found a wide open WR/DB Magic Benton in the right corner of the end zone for an 18-yard TD and a 6-3 Florida lead.
Early in the second quarter Law QB Rocky Perez suffered an injury and had to leave the game. Then the Firecats blocked a 23-yard field goal attempt by Hegnauer and FB/LB Chris Morant scooped up the ball and returned it three yards for a TD and a 13-3 Florida lead.
Law backup QB Rich Lucero rallied the Law with a 29-yard TD pass to WR/DB Torrey Prather to bring Laredo within 13-10. Florida responded with a terrific kickoff return by WR/DB Canon Lamb to the Law 11-yard line, and then Mastrole found Lamb for the TD and a 19-10 lead. Lucero immediately came back with a 10-yard TD pass again to Prather to bring the Law within 19-17 with less than a minute to go in the half. The Firecats' Benton returned the ball to the Law 15, and then Florida capped the drive when Morant bowled over from the one yard line for a TD for a 26-17 lead. On the final play of the first half Lucero was sacked and suffered an injury to his left ankle.
In the second half the Firecats took the opening kickoff and quickly marched down to a score when Mastrole connected with WR/DB Anthony Snead for a 30-yard TD. With Lucero banged up and unable to move effectively on his ankle the Law had to operate from the shotgun formation, which they were not familiar with. The results were predictable as the Law had four bad shotgun snaps in the second half that resulted in turnovers and setup the Firecats in great field position.
In the fourth quarter Florida Firecats FB/LB Steve Gorrie carried for six yards and set a new af2 single season rushing record with 442 yards to thrill the crowd. FINAL SCORE Florida 67, Laredo 17.
